Gilgeous-Alexander powers Thunder past Timberwolves in Game 1

Thunder demonstrated their resilience and defensive prowess in a commanding 114-88 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals. Despite entering halftime trailing 48-44, the Thunder orchestrated a remarkable turnaround, outscoring the Timberwolves 32-18 in the third quarter . Shai Gilgeous-Alexander emerged as a pivotal figure in this comeback, contributing a total of 31 points, including 12 crucial points during the decisive third period. His ability to perform under pressure underscores his role as a leader on the team .

Oklahoma City dominated Minnesota 114-88 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals after a slow first half. A decisive 17-2 third-quarter run propelled the top-seeded Thunder to victory, led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander's game-high 31 points, his fourth consecutive 30-point performance.

Oklahoma City was just two days removed from eliminating Denver in Game 7 of the conference semifinals. Minnesota hadn’t played in a week.

Minnesota led 48-44 at halftime as Randle scored 20 points and made 5 of 6 3-pointers. Gilgeous-Alexander was held to 11 points on 2-of-13 shooting before the break.

“For us to play as poorly as we did offensively in the first half and be down four was a major victory for us at halftime," Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said.

While just one game, the Game 1 winner is important. Game 1 winners in a best-of-seven series have won the series 75.4% of the time, and teams that win Game 1 of a best-of-seven series at home go on to win the series 84.4% of the time.

While Oklahoma City's shooting can be inconsistent, especially in the playoffs, their defense has been consistently dominant. The Thunder led the NBA in defensive rating during the regular season (106.6 points allowed per 100 possessions, 2.5 points better than any other team) and have elevated their performance in the playoffs, allowing a league-best 100.7 points per 100 possessions. Their defense not only stifles opponents but also fuels their own offensive game.

Gilgeous-Alexander, already an elite scorer, thrives in these situations, and the team as a whole benefits from the added pace. Luguentz Dort's tenacious on-ball defense is a major catalyst, routinely hounding opposing guards and forcing turnovers. Chet Holmgren's rim protection is another key element, deterring drives and altering shots, while Jalen Williams provides versatility on both ends of the court. This collective defensive effort makes them a formidable opponent, capable of shutting down even the most potent offenses.

The Timberwolves seek to avenge their 2024 conference finals loss to the Mavericks, while the Thunder make their first conference finals appearance since 2016, when they fell to the Warriors.
