Wimbledon midfielder Sam Hutchinson revealed he suffered a heart attack during a match – yet still scored and finished the game.
On Saturday 3rd May, Hutchinson tapped home a rebounded shot from a corner in the 52nd minute.
Hutchinson formerly played for Chelsea and Sheffield UnitedGettyIt was a crucial win as Wimbledon later went on to secure a League Two play-off spot.
They now await a play-off final against Walsall on Monday 26th May.
As you would expect, it was a moment which gave the 35-year-old an adrenaline rush.
During the ride home, Hutchinson began to feel chest pains and the coach made a pit stop in Nottingham.
Retelling the story, the Wimbledon player said: “We went into the hospital and they essentially told me I’d had a heart attack. I was in there for five days having tests done.
“A branch of an artery was blocked 75% – I had an angiogram and had a stent put in by a specialist in London who was unbelievable. I’m on the road to recovery now.
“I broke down when they told me in the hospital because playing football is all I ever want to do. I didn’t care that I had a heart attack, I’m not really like that.
“It happened in the sixth minute of the game, I carried on and played the full 90. The specialist in London has told me there’s no problem with playing football again, so I’m happy.
“Obviously the whole incident wasn’t nice for my family but for me personally I just see it as another injury, it’s another hurdle for me to overcome.
“I ran yesterday believe it or not, a lot of people say things slow down but I feel really good, I’m going to crack on and come back bigger and stronger.
The winner against Grimsby was Hutchinson’s only goal of the season“I didn’t have a pre-season this season but now I’ll have one this time around, I can’t wait for it.”
Following his experience, ex-Chelsea defender Hutchinson urged people to learn CPR.
“I always saw the adverts for learning CPR and looked into it. My father-in-law used to do first aid and he’s a big advocate for it,” he added.
“I think it’s a must-have, especially when you have children. It helps people. A lot of people run into trouble at games and are then saved by other members of the public who know this important skill. If you can save a life that’s a fantastic thing.”
According to Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), a sudden cardiac arrest kills 12 people a week under the age of 35 in the UK and is one of the highest causes of death in that age group after suicide and accidents.
This came 13 years after former Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba’s near-fatal cardiac arrest against Tottenham Hotspur.
During a Euros 2020 match, Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and was successfully revived on the pitch.
And in 2023, Luton Town defender Tom Lockyer had a cardiac arrest against Bournemouth, stopping his heart for two minutes and 40 seconds.
Footballers are often fitted with implantable cardioverter defibrillators which are placed in the chest to monitor and correct dangerous heart rhythms.
