The Cheers star’s death was confirmed by his longtime publicist Melissa Nathan on May 20, 2025, in a statement to Variety.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him,” the statement read. “He will be missed forever. The family has requested privacy during this time.”
Wendt got his start in the ‘70s as a member of Chicago’s The Second City, an improv theater troupe. He went on to appear in the 1980 film My Bodyguard, and had guest roles on Hart to Hart, Soap, Taxi and Making the Grade before being cast on Cheers as Norm Peterson in 1982.
