4Reel Fishing: Memorial Day fishing ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

* Good day my fellow anglers!  Hope you all have a restful Memorial Day Weekend.  Thanks to all who paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms, many of which we take for granted. One being able to fish when and where we want and then write freely about our experiences on the water.

Blue Lakes

The upper Blue Lakes is a fishing gem in Northern California.  Not only is it a great Trout fishing lake, but it also produces some nice Large Mouth Bass.  Because the lake has a 5 mph. speed limit, it is perfect for kayaking, float tubes and putt-putt boats.  Many anglers are catching Trout from the shore along Hwy. 20 and off the docks located around the lake.  With all of the wind we have been having, fishing for trout has been best off the bottom with Power Bait.  Trollers are also hooking into their fair share of Trout pulling an Action Disk trailed by a fly, Super Duper or Castmaster.

Clear Lake

Boy oh boy!  The wind has been making the fishing difficult for some.  When the lake become this rough you have two choices.  Stay off all together or only fish the north end of the lake near the city of Lakeport.  Also you can fish out of Clearlake launching from the Redbud facility.  These areas are somewhat protected from the wind.  The catfishing has continued to be strong.

The word is that the successful Catfish anglers have been doing well using a live crawdad with a bobber, throwing it in and around rocks and submersed tires.  Even though the bass fishing has slowed some, there are still many upper twenty  pound five fish limits being caught in tournaments.

Lake Mendocino

Lake Mendocino’s bass fishing is pretty good right now.  We are so very blessed to have the ability be on the water in a matter of 10 to 15 minutes.  Because of our work schedule, once again this week Teresa and I fished the evening hours. The bass have moved back into slightly deeper water off of the spawning grounds.– tip,,, Look for rocks and fallen trees along the shoreline. Most of the time there will be bass in these areas. Keep moving and cover a lot of water. Sweetbeavers, Senkos, Robo Worms, spinner baits, chatterbaits and crank baits are all produceing fish.

Lake Sonoma

The Yorty Creek and Cherry Creek areas have been producing many bass, both Small Mouth and Large Mouth.  Most of them are smallish, one to two pounds.  But, here and there you’ll pick up a 3 to 4 pounder.  If things aren’t working for you, change it up.  Try a different lure color and size.  The bass are there, once dialed in you will have fun catching them.

The first of the major summer holidays is here.  With of the busy-ness of our waterways during the summer months, the best times to fish will be early in the morning and the last two hours of daylight.  Remember to be safe and to always watch out for the other guy.  They aren’t watching out for you.

PLEASE practice catch and release!
