One Aldi shopper took to the store's subreddit on Reddit to share their disappointment with the pantry staple's new recipe. featured pictures of an older bottle and a newer bottle of the Simple Nature Ketchup. Per the photos, the original ingredients included Organic Tomato Concentrate, Organic Sugar, Organic Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Less Than 2 % of Organic Onion Powder, and Organic Spices. The new bottle's ingredients are Organic Tomato Puree (Water, Organic Tomato Paste), Organic Sugar, Organic Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Organic Onion Powder, and Organic Spices, per the post. In addition, the newer Simple Nature Ketchup is 20 calories, has 200 mg of sodium, and 4 grams of sugar per tablespoon, while the older version is 15 calories per tablespoon, has 160 mg of sodium, and 3 grams of sugar.
"They changed the organic ketchup. More calories, more added sugar, and it’s definitely sweeter — and not in a good way. It’s noticeably worse. Even the lid was a nightmare to open. Why do they always ruin a good thing?" continued the Aldi shopper in the May 19 post.
"Why can’t we have nice things?" wrote a Reddit user.
"I agree. I bought a new bottle of the ketchup last week and def noticed the taste changed. It was good to begin with, so I don't think the change was needed," shared a different Aldi shopper.
"My night is ruined now," commented another person.
Some commenters also shared their theories as to why the ketchup now tastes different.
"Looks like more water and sugar and less tomato. They think it is a small change and nobody will notice. Perhaps they changed suppliers? Find another store brand that matches the ingredients & nutrition label of the old aldis version," chimed in another.
