One member of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) was killed, and another was wounded after an attack launched by a group from the Islamic State, marking the tenth such incident since the beginning of the current month.
On Monday, May 19, the SDF announced the death of one of its members and injuries to another as a result of an attack targeting one of their points in the town of al-Bahra in the al-Hajin area located in eastern Deir Ezzor.
Through its official website, the SDF stated that the continuous attacks by the Islamic State group on its military points “reflect the challenges it faces and highlight the importance of its work in striking at the roots of terrorism and maintaining security and stability in the region.”
It added that it is committed to its war against the Islamic State, noting that it exerts “arduous efforts” in combating “terrorism.”
The attacks by the Islamic State, concentrated in Deir Ezzor province for more than a month, are not new, but the SDF has started to announce them as they occur, unlike its prior approach.
Last year, the Islamic State’s attacks were almost daily in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, but announcements about their occurrence were limited to the group’s official channels, while the SDF consistently ignored them.
The latest attack is the tenth of its kind that targeted the SDF in May alone, according to what the latter announced via its official channels.
On May 16 of the current month, the SDF launched a security campaign against the Islamic State in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside, resulting in the arrest of ten members after clashes occurred between the two sides.
The SDF stated in a statement at the time that its “Commando” forces executed a security operation in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
The campaign, carried out in cooperation with the Internal Security Forces (Asayish), aimed to arrest a number of members from the cells of the Islamic State.
According to reports gathered by Enab Baladi through the official channels of the SDF, this attack is the tenth of its kind, preceded by a similar attack on May 16 in the village of Abu Hamam in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside.
According to the SDF, the Islamic State group is attempting to exploit the state of chaos in Syria to revive itself and establish the ability to carry out “terrorist operations” in several areas, especially in northeastern Syria.
Officials in the United Nations and other American representatives have previously warned about the return of the group’s activity, amid its ongoing attempts to regain its strength, as reported by The New York Times in April.
