Ukiah High School Track and Field is alive. Last week in our stadium, Wildcat girls and boys – freshmen to seniors – joined with ten Sonoma County teams to put on a show that’ll be remembered by everyone there: The 2025 North Bay League Championships. On two perfect spring days – warm, a little breezy – teenage energy and school colors lit up the place from early afternoon past sundown, when the lights came on for the 2-mile (3200m) run and the electrifying 4-by-400 meter relays.
The Tuesday/Thursday extravaganza was the final season event for our junior varsity athletes – our future stars – who filled all events from discus and shot put to vault and jump, to sprint, hurdle, and distance runs with enthusiasm and developing skills.
For the varsity, it was a challenging test of intense competition with all the Santa Rosa high schools, and 4 others from “down south.” The top six varsity competitors in each event qualified to compete in Fortuna at the Redwood Empire Championships Saturday May 17.
Ukiah qualified 18 girls and boys for that honor, including at least one in all 16 events, some in multiple. Wildcats showed we can compete with the best in our area. Though Analy Boys and Maria Carillo Girls outscored the varsity locals and the field, and Ukiah is still a bit away from topping the charts as a team, we placed 5th in Boys and 6th in Girls of eleven teams, close to the 3rd through 5th.
The late Glenn Erickson, Ukiah’s Godfather of Sports Journalists, might have taken a crack at naming all local athletes competing those two days. With at least 50 in j.v. and varsity, this is too daunting today, and sort of unnecessary. They know who they are, and so do we who watched them. Team spirit and solidarity are their bywords. Reports on individual accomplishments will come next week after the Redwood Empire event Saturday.
The photos here are tributes to our graduating seniors and a few outstanding performers. And they show the color and dynamism of track and field – the ancient, elemental sport that in most of the world is known as Athletics – and of Ukiah’s beautiful place for the kids to play and us to see them.
The continuing tale of Ukiah Wildcat T&F fortunes in Fortuna and beyond will follow.
