Fiscal hawks on the House Budget Committee on Friday blocked the panel from advancing the bill full of President Trump's domestic priorities.
The 16-21 vote marks a major setback for leadership hoping to get the bill to the Senate before Memorial Day.
The Budget Committee must advance the 1,116-page bill, dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," before it can move on to the Rules Committee and to the House floor. The panel combined portions of the megabill advanced over the past two weeks by various committees, including measures regarding Medicaid, taxes and food aid.
But conservatives dug in on their opposition to the measure, and leadership was unable to strike a deal that appeased them in time.
