AUSTIN (KXAN) – A man was stabbed on a bus Wednesday night without provocation, police say.

The Austin Police Department and Austin-Travis County EMS responded to a call saying someone had been stabbed on a CapMetro bus near the intersection of Barton Springs Road and South Lamar Boulevard at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Officers learned that the victim, Akshay Gupta, 30, had been stabbed in the neck. Responders administered life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased at 7:30 p.m.

APD officers arrested Deepak Kandel, 31, who told officers he stabbed Gupta because he looked like his uncle. Kandel has been booked in Travis County Jail and charged with 1st Degree Murder.

According to online records, Kandel has been arrested and released multiple times on felony charges. Attorney information was not available for Kandel as of Thursday. We will update this if that changes.

“Once the bus was stopped, Kandel calmly exited the bus with the other passengers and left the scene on foot. APD patrol officers were able to locate and detain Kandel a short time later,” according to an APD press release.

CapMetro hosted a press conference on Thursday and reported that this is the first homicide to occur on one of their buses in the last 10 years.

“We are heartbroken that this occurred, and our thoughts are with his family and friends and all of those impacted by this devastating loss and awful act of violence,” said Dottie Watkins, the CEO and President of Capital Metro.

CapMetro said there were as many as 12 passengers on the bus during the stabbing.

“We are doing everything possible to support the passengers who were on board and our bus operator, who acted with utmost professionalism during incredibly difficult circumstances,” Watkins said.

“I want you to know that we care deeply about the region that we serve. Everyone deserves to be safe and feel safe on the CapMetro system, and I am personally committed to ensuring that they are,” Watkins continued.
