LA MIRADA – The Los Alamitos baseball team escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh inning to hold off La Mirada for a 4-2 victory Thursday in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.

Griffins starter Tristin Dalzell earned the win by pitching six innings and allowing two runs on three hits, five walks, two hit batters and striking out seven. Perhaps more impressively, Logan Anderson earned the save by striking out the side in the seventh after entering with the bases loaded and no outs.

Dalzell was thrilled to see the way Anderson closed the game.

“I was ecstatic,” Dalzell said. “I was jumping up and down and I actually slipped when I was running out of the dugout, I was so happy.”

Anderson said his mind was clear under pressure.

“I felt great,” Anderson said. “I wasn’t thinking anything, I just came in and threw.”

Los Alamitos’ offense came from Tyler Smith, who went 1 for 3 with a two-RBI single and Nate Walker, who also had a two-RBI single.

Los Alamitos (19-9-2), which finish third in the Sunset League, took its first lead in third inning with a two-out rally. After loading the bases, all with two outs, Smith hit a two-run single to center field to put Los Alamitos up 2-0.

La Mirada (21-8), the Gateway League champion, erased the lead in its half of the third. With the bases loaded nd no outs, Kevin Jeon hit a hard ground ball to right field to score pinch runner Aaron Sykes. Then Aiden Aguayo chopped a ground ball fielder’s choice to score Jacob Celiz and tie the game.

Luke Armijo started for La Mirada and pitched three innings. He allowed three runs on three hits, three walks and  hit a batter. He struck out three.

Kaden Corns relieved Armijo and pitched the final four innings. He allowed one hit and struck out four.

Los Alamitos took the lead for good in the fourth inning when Walker hit a one-out, two-run single to left field to give Los Alamitos a 4-2 lead.

Dalzell shut down La Mirada in the middle innings until La Mirada loaded the bases in the seventh inning. That’s when Anderson took over and struck out the side to secure the win.

“He has been huge,” Los Alamitos coach Scott Talanoa said of Dalzell. “He’s really come into his own. I think he’s got more enthusiasm and passion when he’s pitching now. I call him Nuke because he reminds me of the guy from Bull Durham.”

As for the team’s closer, Talanoa said Anderson “really showed what he can do when the cards are on the table.”

La Mirada coach Jimmy Zurn was frustrated at his team’s missed opportunities, especially in the final inning.

“We didn’t do enough,” Zurn said. “We had to put balls in play with two strikes. We had our chances. We put plenty of guys on and we had our chances.”
