Art-pop duo Private Cathedral (Genevieve Dawson and Wendy Spitzer) stopped by Live & Local this week, following the release of their self-titled debut album.

Private Cathedral is an international outfit, with North Carolina’s Spitzer joining forces with Dawson in the UK. The pair first joined forces a full decade ago – as part of Spitzer’s grad-school thesis.

“It was a course called Creative Practice,” Spitzer remembers. “I was at Goldsmiths, University of London… I chose to do (my master’s thesis) on creative collaboration, and the psychosocial dynamics of how that happens, (and) Genevieve was nice enough to be part of that – and then we just kind of decided there was something to this, so we just kept writing.”

And between long-distance email exchanges and occasional in-person writing binges, Private Cathedral gradually turned Spitzer’s master’s thesis into a reality – a real-life example of the power of creative collaboration, with rich lyrics and complex melodies that’s just a bit askew from anything you’ve ever heard before.

“We’d spend four or five days in my studio,” Dawson says, “just writing, literally dawn to dusk, improvising, trying things out… (and) we found that writing together, we could produce something that neither of us would have written on our own,” says Dawson.

Spitzer agrees. “A kind of third thing happened when the two of us got together,” she says. “It sounds unlike either of the things that we typically do.”

The finished product, engineered by Missy Thangs, came together at Mitch Easter’s Fidelitorium studio in Kernersville – a place that Dawson says “gave us that magic sauce” that added a distinct sound to the final tracks. Now, Private Cathedral is celebrating with an album-release show at The Pinhook in Durham, Friday, May 16, starting at 8 p.m. with Lalitree Darnielle opening. (Spitzer and Dawson also have a show in Carrboro two days later, Sunday, May 18, starting at 5 p.m. at All Day Records.)

And while Private Cathedral will remain an international duo for now, Dawson says she’s starting to fall in love with the Triangle’s music scene.

“The last time I was in North Carolina, I missed my flight because there was a huge storm and I said, ‘okay, Wendy, I want you to show me all of the music from this area.’ It was storming outside, it was really dramatic, and (she) got out all these CDs and tapes and records and showed me the scene of this incredible place. And after that I felt super inspired about the potential of a scene, to inspire so much brilliant music – and it made me feel excited to be a part of it.”

Genevieve Dawson and Wendy Spitzer of Private Cathedral stopped by Live & Local to discuss the album and Friday’s show at the Pinhook. They also performed three songs live: “I Am Not the Person You Think I Am,” “Tattoos,” and “Rituals.” Listen:
