Austin (KXAN)-- One person is dead following a homicide in south Austin Wednesday night, the Austin Police Department said.
APD Wednesday night investigated a homicide on South Lamar Boulevard near the intersection with Barton Springs Road around 6:46 p.m.
Austin Police held a press conference at 9:30 p.m. and were joined by Austin Police Officer David Lewis and CapMetro Director of Security Darryl Jamail.
According to APD, multiple 911 callers indicated to police a male was covered in blood with obvious trauma on a CapMetro bus. When officers arrived at the scene, police along with EMS began life-saving measures. The victim was pronounced deceased at 7:30 p.m. officials said.
With the help of witnesses and the CapMetro Public Safety team, officers were able to apprehend the suspect at 7:12 p.m.
CapMetro said in a statement Wednesday night, “We are outraged and deeply saddened by what took place.” The statement continued to emphasize that the safety and well-being of CapMetro "passengers and operators is our highest priority.”
“Tragically, the incident resulted in the death of our passenger,” the statement said.
“We’re deeply saddened and angered by this, and we are doing everything we can to keep our riders safe,”
Darryl Jamail, Director of Security at CapMetroCapMetro will be working with APD to investigate and determine what happened.
This is still an active crime scene and police urged the public to use different routes if possible. According to Austin Police, this is an isolated incident with no active threat to the community.
