Diamondbacks 2B Ketel Marte cranks 2 home runs early vs. Giants ...Middle East

SAN FRANCISCO — Corbin Carroll started the Arizona Diamondbacks’ series at Oracle Park with two home runs on Monday, and Ketel Marte followed with his own multi-homer performance in Wednesday’s finale.

Marte clubbed two home runs onto Levi’s Landing within the first four innings against the San Francisco Giants for his second game with multiple home runs within the past week.

He dug out a Jordan Hicks sweeper below the zone and shot it over the 25-foot brick wall in right field for a solo shot in the first inning. The blast snapped an 0-for-8 start to his series.

He struck out in his second at-bat, but Marte went back to work in the fourth inning. He worked a 3-1 count against Giants reliever Hayden Birdsong and received a cookie fastball over the heart of the plate.

Marte blasted it 417 feet to right-center field, not the easiest section of Oracle Park for a ball to leave the yard. He didn’t quite get enough of either for a splash hit into McCovey Cove, but he was able to admire his work.

Marte’s 12 games back from the injured list have been up and down (.171 entering Wednesday). He blasted three home runs in two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers last series as the power has started to show its face again.

In a key spot during the eighth inning on Tuesday, however, Marte failed to come through. He chased a Camilo Doval cutter inside and grounded into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded while trailing 7-4.

Wednesday’s start was a promising bounce back as he continues to get his feet underneath him after missing a month.

“He spoils us with excellent play and we gotta be patient with him,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame Wednesday. “There’s still some early at-bats from coming back. He’s gonna be fine. I’ll bet on him anytime.”

The Diamondbacks led the Giants 8-4 after four frames.
