The San Diego Zoo has announced that a baby hamadryas baboon, the first born there since 2019, has been officially named.
Defari, which means “strong” in the Ethiopian language of Amharic, was born to first-time mother Lisa Marie and father Zito as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Hamadryas Baboon Species Survival Plan.
The AZA has multiple Species Survival Plans, or SSPs, which are led by expert adverse to manage demographic distributions and long-term survival of threatened animals.
“Breeding and Transfer Plans summarize the current demographic and genetic status of the population, describe the Animal Program’s management designation, and recommend breeding pairs and transfers,” said the AZA on its website.
“These Plans are designed to maintain a healthy, genetically diverse and demographically stable population for the long-term future.”
Lisa Marie and Defari can usually be found in Africa Rocks surrounded by females — including Lisa Marie’s mother Daphne — who are awaiting the opportunity to hold the infant. Father Zito is curious and protective of his son and maintains watch close by, the zoo said.
The family may also be spotted on the zoo’s Baboon Cam.
