French Open betting guide: Our tips ahead of 2025’s second tennis major ...Middle East

Sport by : (talksport) -

The 2025 French Open is set to get underway at the iconic Roland Garros in Paris, marking the second Grand Slam of the tennis calendar and the sport’s premier clay-court championship. As one of the four major tournaments, alongside the Australian Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open, the French Open holds a distinct place in the tennis world, as conquering Roland Garros is the ultimate test of a players ability. Carlos Alcaraz is the men’s defending champion, Iga Świątek, the women’s. In our French Open tips below, we assess their chances of retaining their titles, along with taking a look at the three doubles and wheelchair events.

French Open 2025 quick tips

Carlos Alcarez to win the Men’s French Open – 6/4 with talkSPORT Bet Aryna Sabalenka to win the Women’s French Open – 5/2 with Midnite Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo to win the men’s doubles – odds to follow Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid to win the men’s wheelchair doubles – odds to follow

Who’s in form ahead of the French Open?

The three in-form men ahead of the French Open are Carlos Alcarez, Casper Ruud and Jack Draper.

Alcarez has won the Monte-Carlo Masters on clay, and Ruud won the Madrid Open. Britain’s Jack Draper has also continued to impress. He reached the final in Madrid, and is now inside the world’s top ten ranked players.

On the flip side, world No.1 Jannik Sinner has just returned from a ban and maybe won’t be up to speed for the start of the tournament, while 2023 champion, Novak Djokovic has struggled on the clay, and recently split from coach Andy Murray.

Aryna Sabalenka is the No.1 ranked woman in the world and is currently the dominant force in the female game. The two-time Grand Slam champion is in good form on the clay, having won the Madrid Open and reaching the final in Stuttgart.

Another player currently performing well on the women’s circuit is Coco Guaff. The 21-year-old’s consistent form has seen her rise to No.3 in the world, and she also has a French Open final to her name, after losing to Iga Świątek in the 2022 final.

The aforementioned Świątek has had a poor run of form on all surfaces and it remains to be seen if her preference for clay can see her come good again in Paris.

Carlos Alcaraz to defend his men’s singles title

With Jannik Sinner only just returning from a three-month ban, Carlos Alcaraz looks the man to beat in Paris.

Not only is the Spaniard the defending champion, he can also point to his stunning five-set semi-final win over Sinner in the 2024 edition as further proof that he is the man to beat on clay.

Furthermore, Alcaraz has been in good form in recent weeks. The Roland Garros defending champion has won the Monte-Carlo Masters and also reached the final in Barcelona.

Jannik Sinner still can’t be ruled out. Before his suspension he triumphed at the Shanghai Masters, ATP Finals and the Australian Open. And with the Paris event being a two-week long tournament, the world No.1 has time to play himself back into form.

Also coming good in the men’s game are Casper Ruud and Jack Draper.

Ruud is a real dark horse with two Paris finals to his name and a tournament win on clay in recent weeks.

As for Britain’s Jack Draper, he has continued to impress in recent weeks and months.

But despite his meteoric rise, the 23-year-old may not yet possess the fitness and composure to win a Grand Slam event.

Taking all that into account makes a bet on the Spanish boy-wonder look like the more sensible option.

Aryna Sabalenka to break Świątek’s Paris domination and win first French Open title

It’s very difficult to look past Aryna Sabalenka when it comes to selecting a pick to win the women’s title.

It’s not all cut and dry, though. Sabalenka is over 4000 points clear of her rivals at the top of the women’s rankings. She has been a consistent performer, but she has dropped finals she was expected to win in recent months.

The 27-year-old unexpectedly lost the final of the Australian Open against Madison Keys in January. She also lost finals at Indian Wells and Stuttgart. But, underlining Sabelanka’s incredible consistency are her wins at the Miami Open and on the clay in Madrid, where she defeated Coco Guaff in two sets.

Further increasing Sabalenka’s chances of a first Grand Slam win in Paris is the poor form of four-time French Open winner Iga Świątek, who hasn’t reached the final of any event since she won the title at Roland Garros in 2024.

Rather than looking towards Świątek as Sabelanka’s biggest threat, it is more likely that it will come from Coco Guaff. The American has a decent record in Paris, having reached the final in 2022 and semi-final in 2024.

Guaff is also in good form having reached the final in Madrid and will have further grown in confidence and self belief after winning the 2024 WTA Finals.

The bookmakers are struggling to separate Sabalenka and Iga Świątek in the latest French Open betting odds, and that is to our benefit as it is giving us better odds on Sabalenka.

In recent years the world No.1 hasn’t looked assured on clay. At the moment, Sabalenka looks assured on every surface.

Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo look set to retain men’s doubles title

Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo have established themselves as one of the most consistent men’s doubles pairings in world tennis.

The defending French Open champions and current world No. 1 duo have already added titles at Indian Wells and Miami in 2025,

In the women’s, Coco Gauff and Kateřina Siniaková claimed an unlikely yet memorable victory at Roland Garros in 2024.

Thrown together at the last minute due to an injury to Gauff’s regular partner Jessica Pegula, the newly-formed duo defeated Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6, 6-3 in the final.

Lyudmyla Kichenok and Jeļena Ostapenko are the current US Open champions and look the pairing to beat. Although, 2016 and 2022 champions, Kristina Mladenovic and Caroline Garcia will be dangerous on familiar home clay.

In the mixed doubles, the experienced duo of Mate Pavić and Lyudmyla Kichenok have a proven pedigree, having won the Wimbledon title in 2023.

Another Grand Slam-winning pair, Kristina Mladenovic and Ivan Dodig, also bring a wealth of experience and could be contenders for a deep tournament run.

Out of the three draws, a bet on Mate Pavić and Marcelo Arévalo to defend their crown in the men’s looks the most solid wager.

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid set to win sixth straight men’s wheelchair doubles title

Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid have been the premier force in men’s wheelchair doubles over the past few years.

The British duo have won five consecutive French Open titles from 2020 to 2024, with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 win over Japan’s Takuya Miki and Tokito Oda their most recent title on the Rolland Garros clay.

In 2024, the duo completed the elusive career Golden Slam by clinching the Paralympic gold medal in Paris. Again they defeated Miki and Oda, this time 6-2, 6-1. Their achievement places them among the most accomplished partnerships in wheelchair tennis history.

Continuing their impressive form, Hewett and Reid began 2025 by winning the Australian Open title, marking their six consecutive victory at the event.

With over 20 Grand Slam titles together, including their recent Aussie Open win in January, Hewett and Reid have demonstrated unparalleled consistency and look set to win again in Paris.

Rafa Nadal presided over this event for years and was the French Open tennis betting favourite with punters. The legendary Spaniard is now retired, and his compatriot Carlos Alcaraz is bidding to become the new King of Clay.

Alcaraz defeated Lorenzo Musetti to win the Monte-Carlo Masters in mid-April. He then lost to Holger Rune in the final of the Barcelona Open the following week. Overall, the defending champ’s preparations are going okay.

Iga Świątek has dominated the women’s event, winning four of the last five, including the previous three.

The Pole has struggled during the 2025 season. She experienced early exits in key clay court tournaments, including a third-round loss to Danielle Collins at the Italian Open and a chastening 6-1, 6-1 semi final defeat to Coco Gauff at the Madrid Open.

These results have contributed to Świątekher dropping out of the WTA’s top two rankings for the first time since 2022.

Despite these setbacks, the defending champion’s track record at Roland Garros remains formidable. She boasts a 35–2 win-loss record on the clay of Roland Garros.

French Open betting markets

Match winner

The match winner market is one of the most straightforward and is offered by all the best betting sites. Here you’re betting on which player will win a specific match, regardless of scoreline. The wager is popular for both single match bets and accumulators (multiples). For example, if you bet on Carlos Alcaraz to beat Holger Rune and the Spaniard wins, your bet is successful. Odds vary depending on player rankings, form, and surface record. In early rounds, top seeds often carry very short odds, while upsets can offer bigger rewards. This market is ideal for those who focus on form, head-to-head stats, and playing conditions, especially on tougher surfaces like clay.

Handicaps

Handicap markets were created to level the playing field by giving one player a virtual advantage or disadvantage. These come in two forms: game handicaps and set handicaps. For example, betting Alcaraz -5.5 games means he must win six more games than his opponent. If the final score is 6-3, 6-4 (12-7 in games), your bet wins. This market is ideal if you want to back a strong favorite at better odds, or support an underdog to keep a match close. Set handicaps could be Sinner -1.5  to beat Djokovic. Sinner would have to win 3-1 in sets for the wager to win.

Total sets/total games

Here, you are betting on how many sets or games will be played in a match. In a best-of-five men’s match, for example, you might bet over 3.5 sets, expecting a 3-1 or 3-2 result. For total games, a market may offer over 22.5 games. Over would win if the score was 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 (a total of 29 games), under 22.5 would win if the match finished 6-1, 1-6, 6-2 (22 games). This market suits matches between closely ranked players, or when you’re unsure of the winner but anticipate a competitive match.

Set betting (scores)

Set betting involves predicting the exact scoreline of a match in sets. It’s high-risk but offers higher rewards than the match winner market. For example, backing Iga Swiatek to win 2-0 pays more than simply backing her to win. This market requires research to establish the likely dominance or competitiveness of a match. If a top seed is expected to breeze through, a 2-0 or 3-0 correct score is a strong play. For evenly matched contests, 3-2 or 2-1 predictions offer value.

Tournament winner & other outrights

Outright betting involves wagering on players to win the tournament, reach the final, or even win their quarter or half of the draw. For instance, you could back Carlos Alcaraz to win the men’s singles, or Ons Jabeur to reach the women’s final. Odds will be higher before the tournament begins and shorten as players progress. These markets offer great value if you are a long-term punter who studies draw paths, surface strengths, and recent trends.
