A stretch of 37th Street in Evans will be closed for more than three months as the city kicks off three major infrastructure projects to be completed this summer.
Construction on Phase 2B of the 37th Street Widening project began Monday, as crews work to upgrade the street from Stampede Drive to 35th Avenue into four lanes with a landscaped center median — matching the work already done from 47th Avenue to Stampede Drive, according to a city news release.
The road will remain fully closed to thru traffic for the next three-plus months, but the city has stressed to the contractor the importance of having at least two lanes open by mid-August for the beginning of next school year, according to the release.
The city asks any drivers detouring through neighborhoods north of 37th Street to exercise extreme caution due to the large number of pedestrians — school-aged children, in particular — in the area.
The project is funded, in part, by the 1% road tax approved by voters in 2020, the city said. The project was originally budgeted at more than $5.7 million, but the contract Evans signed with GLH Construction to complete the work is not to exceed $3.971 million, according to the release.
The 37th Street Widening Project was approved in 2019 and intends to widen 37th Street to four lanes from 35th Avenue to 65th Avenue. Since its approval, the city has made several steps, installing a roundabout at 37th Street and 47th Avenue and already adding the extra two lanes from 47th Avenue to Stampede Drive.
The widening project is part of the larger Weld County Freedom Parkway Access Control Plan, which aims to turn 37th Street — also known as Weld County Road 54 and Larimer County Road 15 — into a more prominent east-west corridor between Interstate 25 and Weld 49.
Along with 37th Street, Evans said a stoplight will also soon be installed at 23rd Avenue and 34th Street, as well as a sewer main under State Street from 31st to 37th avenues.
Work to install the stoplight — which will include four traffic signals as well as pedestrian poles and signals at each corner — is set to begin soon, according to the release. The city hopes the stoplight will increase public safety in one of the city’s busiest areas near two schools: Chappelow Arts Magnet and Dos Rios Elementary.
Lumen8 Transportation Technologies will be installing the stoplight.
The new sewer main to be installed under State Street from 31st to 37th Avenue will be 12 inches, upgrading from the 8-inch main that is currently used, the city said. It is designed to handle both current and future volume requirements, as well as realign the main so work can be completed on the East Side Storm Sewer Project as designed, according to the release.
The project was originally budgeted at $2 million, but the city said the contract signed with Colorado Civil Infrastructure says the work is to be completed for no more than $1.16 million.
The city does not yet know the start date for the sewer main installation.
