Ukiah Valley Fish and Wildlife Club

The 2025 Steelhead season has officially come to a close, with a total count of 854 Steelhead for the season!

While there are still two troughs to feed daily, water to the facility was shut off on May 1st, marking the closure of the fish ladder. The final spawning event was held on April 22, and the Fish Facility closed its gates to the public the following day, on April 23. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Tommy and Joe for their incredible efforts throughout the season and beyond. We truly appreciate your commitment and support!

* Club’s  next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at Round Table Pizza, 292 South State St. Join us at 6 p.m.

Clear Lake –  Right now is the best time of the year to fish Clear Lake.  The water quality for the most part is pretty good (although an algae bloom has already begun.).  With so many bass up in the shallows now, it’s kind of like they are spawning in shifts.  One angler told me that the best bait he’s used for bedding bass is a salamander lure.  He has been pitching it onto the nest and the fish just eat it up.  Sounds good to me, I’ll have to give it a try.  Like Blue Lakes, the wind has picked up in the late morning and early afternoon.  This makes it hard to keep your boat in position to sight fish for bedding bass.

* Don’t forget the big 41st Annual Catfish Derby is coming, May 16, 17, and 18.  First place prize is $5,000.  Also, $10,000 in cash and prizes — Adult and kid divisions.(Here kitty-kitty…)For more information go to www.clearlakeoaks.org/derby or stop by MOIR’S and pick up a entry form.

Lake Pillsbury-  Boy, oh boy, I have been getting many great reports about the trout and bass fishing on our lake up on the mountain.. Because the water temperature is a bit cooler than Lake Mendocino the bass are just starting their spawning mode. The lake is in good shape so, the water is up in the spawning grounds. I had a fellow angler tell me that they “knocked them dead” (them, being trout) trolling alone the East side of the lake. The best time to fish is by far in the morning hours. Often the wind will come up in the early afternoon.  The road is in fair shape, still bumpy so, take it slow and easy and you’ll be just fine.

Blue Lakes – The bass fishing on the peaceful Upper Blue Lake has picked up.  The morning hours have been the best time to fish.  Some anglers have been catching bass on a top water lure. (Shad colored Zara Spook Puppy)  Work the shoreline in cover along the Le Trianon side of the lake.  I have also received reports of some nice bass being hooked in the creek channel near the Blue Lakes Lodge.

Trout anglers have also been doing pretty good.  The gang who fish from the banks along Hwy. 20 say the morning hours are the best time to fish.  Trollers have also been catching their fair share of trout.  The key has been to get your Action Disk down 20 to 25 feet.

The Russian River – Did you know that it is Shad fishing season on our Russian River?  SHAD? Yup, that’s right.  Many are over two pounds.  The Shad are moving up the river right now and the conditions are good and getting better.  The “Hot Spot” so far has been Johnson’s Beach area down near Guernville.

East Fork of the Russian River- Trout fishing at the Potter Valley bridge is good!  California Department of Fish and Wildlife has stocked this area two or three times and has plans to keep on stocking it for a while.

Be safe-Be kind-watch out for the other guy.
