Case in point: Daryl Hall. The legendary voice of Hall & Oates, a man whose melodies have soundtracked countless good times, recently let loose with his true feelings about being a poster boy for "yacht rock." Speaking on the Broken Record podcast last Thursday, May 8, the 78-year-old icon didn't just dip a toe in – he dove headfirst into a fiery critique.
"This is something I don't understand," Hall declared. "First of all, yacht rock was a f---ing joke by two jerk-offs in California, and suddenly it became a genre and I don't even understand it. I never understood it."
He elaborated on the frustration of being miscategorized throughout his career with former partner John Oates. "They couldn't label us," Hall lamented. "They came up with all this kind of crap, soft rock and yacht rock, and all this other nonsense. And none of it, none of it really describes anything that I do, really.”

JD Ryznar, one of the creators of that series, is credited with coining the term. As he explained to the Seattle Times, the name clicked when he noticed these musicians often collaborated, their album art sometimes featured boats, lyrics occasionally mentioned sailing, and the music itself just "sounded really good on boats because it’s good for relaxing, sitting back and drinking."
Thus, acts like Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers, Toto, and of course, Hall & Oates, became the unwitting flagships of "yacht rock" – a genre built on smooth, catchy songs that, ironically, some of its key alleged members would rather see sink to the bottom of the ocean. So next time you're cruising to those smooth grooves, just remember: the captain might not like the name of the ship.
