Their clash will take place at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Florida on May 25 as WWE presents the special event, the 39th in the Saturday Night’s Main Event series that dates back to 1985.

Since the days of Hulk Hogan and ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage, the periodic specials have acted as a break between major WWE pay-per-view events and, generally speaking, are when fewer shocks and surprises take place.

That far from makes the spectacles insignificant, though. Even as far back as 1998, an eye-watering TV audience of 33 million tuned in to see Hogan battle Andre The Giant, only for Ted DiBiase to effectively sneak out the back door with the WWE Championship.

The big fight feel continues going into Tampa this time around, too, as Paul readies himself for yet another world championship match.

The 30-year-old’s exposure to the title scene in WWE is close to unfathomable considering he’s only been an active wrestler since 2022.

His in-ring career stats are even more intriguing. Including his debut in a tag team match alongside The Miz against Dominik and Rey Mysteiro, he’s totalled just 19 outings in all, according to stat website Cagematch.

When you distil the figure further to pick out just singles matches involving the relative youngster, his tally of matches stands at just 11, including bouts at SummerSlam and WrestleMania.

His impending clash with Uso will bring up a dozen of singles bouts for Paul and, staggeringly, a reality that he’ll have competed for championships in half of those matches.

A handful are accounted for by winning, briefly defending and losing the United States Championship he held.

Even those aside, his bout with Uso will come after taking swings at ending the title runs of Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes.

WWE have done a fine job in showcasing Paul’s undoubted talentsWWE

The fifty percent figure will nevertheless divide opinion between those who are wowed by Paul’s undoubted natural ability inside a wrestling ring, and those who feel he’s been afforded a far greater number of opportunities than many wrestlers still only 19 matches into their career.

While that debate will rage on beyond Saturday Night’s Main Event, it’s clear the YouTube star has the respect of many of his peers.

Paul quickly won over veteran Randy Orton in WWE and, in a recent talkSPORT interview with Jon Jackson, Carlito also gave the Maverick his due.

A multi-time champion in his own right, the Judgement Day member said of the high-flyer: “He’s earned the right to be called a wrestler.

“He can actually get in there and do some damage.”

The 46-year-old, who, by contrast, has wrestled in over 1,400 career matches to-date, added that Paul is one of a new breed of ‘celebrity’ to have come in and taken WWE by storm.

“I like when they come in and they actually take it seriously and then do great things,” he went on to say.

“WWE is on a good streak of people to come in [when] they’re not just there to be a celebrity of just get their face on WWE TV.

“They actually put the work in and they’ve done great work.”

If Paul – or any other celebrity for that matter – has made a big impression on Carlito or WWE, the apple spitting sensation isn’t one for getting giddy about it.

“I don’t really get starstruck,” he joked. “I don’t care enough. I’m the worst fan ever.

“I’m not going to stand in line for anybody or chase them around for a picture, that’s just not me.”

Paul becoming World Heavyweight Champion in WWE as early as this month seems unlikely, but his path to top title stardom in the company seems inevitable – as is the fact he’ll surely do it fewer singles matches than almost anyone in history.
