Walsall v Chesterfield prediction

Walsall head into the second leg of their League Two play-off semi final have won back to back matches following a run of 13 matches without victory before their win at Crewe on the final day of the season, which they followed with a 2-0 win at Chesterfield in the first leg of their play-off on Sunday afternoon.

Mat Sadler’s side held an eight point lead at the top of League Two heading into the final weekend of January and looking very much like coasting their way to automatic promotion back in the third tier after six seasons in the fourth.

The Saddlers won just two of their following 20 matches which saw them drop out of the automatic promotion places altogether, and had to settle for a place in the play-offs despite victory on the final day of the season.

The West Midlands side head into their second leg with a two goal advantage but have won only one of their last nine matches at home, including none of the last six, of which they’ve lost four. Ironically their last home win came against Chesterfield back in February.

Chesterfield compiled a long unbeaten run to sneak into the play-offs on the final day of the season with victory at Accrington despite having been as low as 14th in early March.

A run of one defeat in 13 for Paul Cook’s side, including nine wins saw the Spireites sneak into the top seven despite starting the final day of the season down in ninth place.

The Derbyshire side have won four of their last six matches away from home and will travel to the Bescot Stadium knowing they have nothing to lose in Friday’s semi final second leg.

Chesterfield will have to go hard from the off and are in good form despite their defeat on Sunday against a Walsall side who have lost four of their last six at home – a nervy affair could be in store for the home side but they should get the job done, a 2-1 away win seeming a distinct possibility.

Walsall v Chesterfield bet builder

Chesterfield to win, Walsall to progress, Will Grigg to score, Chesterfield to score in both halves – 43/1 with Midnite

Chesterfield won nine of their last 13 games of the season to sneak into the play-offs on the final day of the campaign, including four of their last six matches away from home, while Walsall won only one of their last nine at home.

Will Grigg has scored more goals than any other player on either team and has scored in his last three games for Chesterfield, including the all important top seven-clinching goal on the final day to set up a tie with his former club.

Only one team scored more goals in the regular season of League Two than Chesterfield.
