BCCI President Roger Binny and Secretary Devajit Saikia lavished high praise on Virat Kohli for the contributions that he made to Test cricket over the years, labelling him as the 'ambassador' and a 'true guardian' of the purest format of the game.

On Monday, May 12, former India National Cricket Team skipper Virat Kohli officially announced his retirement from his favorite format, Test cricket.

Kohli finished his Test career with 123 matches under his belt. In those matches, Kohli got the opportunity to bat in 210 innings in which he amassed 9230 runs at a good average of 46.85 and with his best score being 254*.

Virat Kohli's outside off-stump weakness haunted him a lot, and he continuously got out in a similar fashion. He averaged above 50 for most of his red-ball career, but a steep downfall saw him finish with an average of 46.85, which is good but not by the standards he set for himself.

"Virat’s departure from the longest format brings to a close a chapter that not only elevated Indian Cricket on the global stage but also rekindled public passion for Test cricket in an era dominated by limited-overs formats," the BCCI stated.

His leadership marked a shift in how India competed overseas - Roger Binny

The BCCI President, Roger Binny, said that Kohli's commitment to Test cricket set him apart from others, and his leadership made India a dominant force in both home and overseas conditions. He stated:

"His leadership marked a shift in how India competed overseas—with aggression, belief, and a refusal to settle for second best. He inspired a generation to take pride in the whites, and his impact on Indian cricket will be felt for decades to come.”

Test cricket found not just an ambassador, but a true guardian in Virat - Devajit Saikia

“Test cricket found not just an ambassador, but a true guardian in Virat Kohli. He led from the front, drove standards higher, and placed unmatched emphasis on fitness, discipline, and mental toughness.

"His batting performances—especially in challenging overseas conditions—have become reference points for future cricketers. He retires from this format as India’s most successful Test captain, setting the bar very high for the next generation.”
