Report: Diamondbacks calling up top prospect Jordan Lawlar ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up infielder and top prospect Jordan Lawlar from Triple-A Reno, Nick Piecoro of AZCentral.com first reported late Sunday evening.

The team has yet to announce its roster moves.

The speedy, right-handed hitter — who just won Pacific Coast League Player of the Month for April — will join the club in San Francisco, as the D-backs are set to begin a three-game series with the Giants on Monday.

Lawlar has dominated Triple-A pitching this season with a slash line of .336/.413/.579, six home runs, 15 doubles and 13 stolen bases in 37 games.

He leads the PCL in extra-base hits and total bases. He is also tied for third in steals.

“Every day, I’ve come to the field with the mindset of being a big leaguer and performing like a big leaguer,” Lawlar told Arizona Sports’ Ain’t No Fang podcast on Thursday. “So that’s where my mindset’s been since I walked in the clubhouse this spring, and I haven’t let that go.”

Lawlar entered spring training without much of a chance to crack the Opening Day roster, as he missed most of last year with injuries and lost important reps. He only played 23 total games (including the Arizona Complex League) and hit .318 with nine extra-base hits and six steals.

The 22-year-old made up for lost time in the Dominican Winter League with Tigres del Licey and came back with a strong spring training.

The club entered the season with a full infield, starting Eugenio Suarez at third base, Geraldo Perdomo at shortstop and Ketel Marte at second base.

The Diamondbacks opted to start Lawlar in the minors for everyday playing time. He also had some final boxes to check on both sides of the ball before getting called up for good.

“We are very well aware of Jordan Lawlar and his progression and his development, and he is coming on quickly,” manager Torey Lovullo said pregame on Sunday. “He is a very talented player that is knocking as hard as you can at the big league door.”

The Diamondbacks worked Lawlar at both shortstop and third base over the spring, and he has since received looks at second base.

When the D-backs placed Marte on the injured list with a hamstring strain on April 5, Lawlar had hardly played the position. Tim Tawa received the call-up after a hot start to the season in Reno, and Lawlar has embraced the challenge of learning a new spot.

“Maybe initially it was probably flipping everything,” Lawlar said of the biggest adjustment. “Then once you get enough reps there, you start to feel comfortable with that. Now I feel pretty confident really anywhere on the field.”

Lovullo went deeper on how moving Lawlar around defensively would get him in the lineup enough to develop at the big leagues on Sunday. Perhaps three or four starts per week is on the table.

“ I wouldn’t mind it, that’s for sure,” Lovullo said with a smile. “I want impact players here. ….  I know he is gonna impact the game offensively, but you can’t totally count on it all the time. What’s he gonna do defensively? Is he able to move around comfortably and play three positions, comfortably making his plays? The answers have been yes.”

In his last full minor league season, Lawlar hit .319 with a .900 OPS in 2023, blasting 20 home runs with 36 stolen bases in 105 games before getting called up.

Jordan Lawlar’s 2nd MLB call-up

Lawlar made his MLB debut in September 2023, struggling at first to hit big league pitching (4-for-31) but showing off his athleticism and speed. He hardly played in the postseason and was set to begin 2024 in the minors to play everyday before a torn ligament in his thumb hampered that plan.

Lawlar was a regular at Chase Field during his injury recovery, watching and learning what he could from the major league club.

MLB Pipeline updated its top 100 rankings on Sunday, placing Lawlar No. 4 overall. The D-backs have high expectations for the 2021 No. 6 pick.
