Farmers, food program providers, and labor leaders will meet with elected officials and others to discuss the importance of United States Department of Agriculture food assistance programs.
The importance will be highlighted in an 11:30 press conference at Feeding San Diego.
The USDA under theTrump administration announced it would end funding for the Local Food Purchase Assistance and Local Food for Schools programs, which under former U.S. President Joe Biden provided millions for local food supply chains across the country.
The LFPA program supported the local food system by providing funds to food banks to purchase local produce from small to mid-sized farms, said Feeding San Diego — which said it now expects its funding to run out by the end of 2025 — in a statement.
“Hunger relief organizations are bracing for the potential of intense cuts to SNAP and Medicaid that would create immense hardship in communities nationwide, including right here in San Diego County,” the statement added.
The Trump administration canceled around $660 million in funding for the programs that was to be paid out over the next few years.
The cuts in the Trump budget also include major slashes to other food assistance programs and more.
Additionally, last week the Department of Agriculture demanded that states hand over sensitive information about food assistance recipients such as addresses, Social Security numbers, and possibly citizenship status.
The agency claims — without proof — that it has terminated more than $5.5 billion in what it calls “unnecessary and wasteful spending,” since Jan. 20.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, served an average of 42 million people each month in 2024, at the cost of around $112 billion — less than 2% of the federal budget.
