"I really hope my nipples aren't out right now," is not a thought I usually have at the gym. But inspired by the white tank tops in Tate McRae's recent music videos, I recently found myself mid-elliptical (and sans sports bra) for what might be one of my most high stakes editor experiments to date. My fixation with the tanks began with McRae's "Revolving Door" video, in which she famously flips from a high attitude into a one-legged backbend. Throughout this impressive choreography, not only does her top hug all the right places, but it also does not move an inch.
In case you weren't already sold, McRae brings the same tank back for her "Sports Car" video, and another, lower-cut racerback for her "2 Hands" video, further solidifying her title as tank top aficionado. That said, while the camis are undeniably flattering on camera - are they actually workout-friendly? To find out, I put two of McRae's favorite tanks to the test. Here are my biggest takeaways.
First Impressions
Both of the white tank tops used in McRae's music videos are from the brand Joah Brown. I ordered a medium in both and felt like they ran true to size, but honestly, I've never tried tank tops that fit quite like these.
I wore the Smoothing Cami in Sueded White ($84) for an upper body and cardio day and was pleasantly surprised by how the material shaped my waist. According to the brand's site, the cami is made with "body contouring fabric" meant to feel like a second skin, and I would be inclined to agree. I don't know if I should thank the tank top Gods or the 24 percent spandex content for helping me achieve such a nice hourglass shape, but either way, I was grateful.
The actual workout went smoothly enough. The cami doesn't have any added support, so as I amped up the intensity of my cardio, I started getting a little nervous. I still felt comfortable, just a little less secure - but the good news is, the neckline didn't budge throughout my 30-minute cardio session. As I finished up with some strength training, I popped into the locker room to check for any sweat stains and was happy to see that the damage was minimal and hardly noticeable.
Next up was the V-Neck Racerback Tank in White FlexRib ($78) which I wore for leg day. This cut I found even more flattering than the first (and a little easier to breathe in), but the plunge neckline is no joke. A quick wear test also confirmed that this one is sports-bra required, in case you were wondering.
That said, there were no nip slips to be had, and the ribbed material of the racerback made sense in a gym setting. I don't know what it is about a good white tank that feels so effortlessly cool, but I was definitely channeling that energy throughout my workout (and I'd highly recommend).
What I Liked
Even as a health and fitness editor, I can confidently say these are some of the most flattering tank tops I own. I like that they're both functional and fashionable, and I'd be hard pressed to find a pair of pants they don't go well with. The cami felt soft and cinched my waist in, while the neckline of the ribbed racerback gave me an instant confidence boost. When you consider that they can serve as both athleisure and quality basics, it's no wonder why McRae is such a big fan of these tanks herself. All in all, these are tops I can definitely see myself reaching for again and again.
What to Consider
I'm a 34C for reference, but I would recommend wearing additional support (i.e. a sports bra) if you want to wear the smoothing cami while running or completing another form of cardio. The top stays in place, but it won't necessarily give you the comfort or security you need, which is to be expected - it's just a tank top, after all.
On another note, the cami is thick enough that it isn't see-through, but it's not exactly great for cold mornings. I'd recommend layering in public spaces (at least until you warm up).
Lastly, although I genuinely loved the tanks, the price tag is undoubtedly steep for tops made primarily from synthetic materials (76 percent polyester for the cami and 90 percent rayon for the racerback). I will say the tanks still felt extremely comfortable on - even while exercising - but shoppers can use their own discretion when deciding if it's worth the splurge.
