Comedian Allison Goldberg is flipping the script when it comes to dating with her bold and hilarious live show Love Isn’t Blind — where the men can’t speak.

Friday at the downtown Guild Hotel, the show invites singles, couples and everyone in between for an evening filled with laughter, fun and new connections.

Rather than your typical swipe-left-or-right action on traditional dating apps, Goldberg puts the spotlight on four contestants who must compete in a series of challenges to win a date with the lucky bachelorette.

From searching through the contestants’ phones to calling their mothers live on stage, chaos erupts after each round along with chances for the audience to make love matches of their own.

Guests are identified by colored wristbands — green for singles, red for those in relationships, and yellow for “it’s complicated.” But no matter the relationship status, the night is a chance to meet new people, with a special prize in store for any “wing-person” who can successfully match two single people in the audience.

Goldberg refers to the show as her “post-pandemic baby,” inspired by her desire to create a rowdy space for people to interact and strip away the filters of online dating. Although the show pokes fun at her male contestants, she says Love Isn’t Blind promotes a positive environment meant to make everyone look good, feel great and leave with hot dates.

“My single girls and I would sit around and complain about how we would go out on dates with men who would just monologue at us and not ask us any questions about ourselves. So I thought, what if they’d shut the f*** up,” Goldberg said.

“The fun thing about the show is that it has accidentally become a look at what is positive masculinity. I created the show because of these men who behave badly but the men who actually do this show are the ones who are here for the feminist joke — they tend to be excellent men.”

According to the show’s website, 85% of on-stage matches have resulted in couples going on between two and twelve dates after the show. Since it started in September 2022, Love Isn’t Blind has toured nationally, making stops in roughly 10 cities — including frequent shows in San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Portland.

Goldberg has been returning to San Diego every two months since June 2024, crediting the city’s enthusiastic participants and lively audience for bringing that distinct “San Diego flavor” on stage. For this show, she says her contestants and bachelorette all bring something to the table, from owning a San Diego coffee brand to running a fashion line of swimwear.

She reveals that the Friday’s bachelorette has a love of poetry which will pose a challenge for the contestants who will need to channel their inner Shakespeare in order to win her heart.

As Goldberg prepares for the show, she reminds people that this is a “toast show rather than a roast show.” At its core, Love Isn’t Blind is about stepping out of your comfort zone—a space where strangers connect, friendships form and love is in the air.

“I know its cheesy, but I just want people to walk away feeling joyful. I’ve done this show now probably 100 times and it always different – there’s always these wild moments. I just want everyone to leave feeling joyful, feeling like they can say hi to someone they don’t know and put themselves out there, knowing its going to be okay, even if it doesn’t go the way they wanted it to,” Goldberg said.

“I hope people leave with new friends, dates and lovers and just feeling good, especially when the world can feel kind of dystopian sometimes.”Tickets for Friday are available for $22.80 per person. To purchase a ticket for the Love Isn’t Blind show in San Diego, visit the official website here.
