The UK was on Thursday the first country to agree a deal with Trump since he announced his ‘Liberation Day’ global trade war, but the agreement leaves a 10 per cent duty in place across most British exports to the US.
However, it is understood to still be on the table as the UK searches for additional tariff cuts.
A UK official meanwhile told Politico: “Everything’s on the table. If it’s something fantastically attractive… if the sum that goes into the deal outweighs what goes with the digital services tax, then let’s do it.”
Google, eBay, Apple, and Amazon have publicly acknowledged paying the tax. Elon Musk’s X and Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta are also believed to qualify for the levy.
Starmer has said he wants to “go further in relation to tariffs” and the ‘economic prosperity deal’ agreed between the UK and the US states that it “can further be expanded over time to cover additional areas”, with each country wanting to “continue to improve market access”.
Asked whether DST would feature in the next stage of talks, the Prime Minister’s Deputy Official Spokesman said on Friday: “The position on the digital services tax remains unchanged.”
“We’re continuing talks on that wider economic deal, which will look at increasing digital trade, which is a tremendous opportunity.”
