Marking a notable entry into the Middle Eastern leisure market, The Walt Disney Company has revealed its plans for the creation of “Disneyland Abu Dhabi” on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island.
This venture will be the seventh Disneyland resort globally and the inaugural one in the Middle East, realized through a collaboration with Miral, the Abu Dhabi-based developer specializing in entertainment destinations.
The resort is envisioned to blend Disney’s iconic storytelling and characters with Emirati cultural traditions, with a strong emphasis on delivering technologically advanced and interactive entertainment experiences.
Central to the resort is anticipated to be a contemporary, crystal-inspired palace, intended as a symbol of innovation and modernity, departing from the traditional castle designs prevalent in other Disney parks.
The financial backing, construction, and operational management of the resort will be the responsibility of Miral, whereas Walt Disney Imagineering will be tasked with spearheading the creative design and ensuring operational adherence to Disney’s internationally recognized standards.
Disney’s revenue model will be based on licensing and operational supervision fees, without direct capital investment in the project.
The Yas Island’s strategic location, within a four-hour flight radius of one-third of the world’s population, positions it as an advantageous site for attracting international visitors.
The island is already home to a diverse range of entertainment, such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi. While the opening date for Disneyland Abu Dhabi remains undisclosed, the design and construction phases are projected to span several years.
This project aligns with Disney’s previously announced US$60 billion investment strategy aimed at expanding its resorts and entertainment offerings worldwide over the next decade.
