dolphins along Oahu's eastern shorelines has raised significant concerns regarding public health and marine wildlife management. This bacterial infection, identified by scientists at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, poses a direct threat to humans as it can be transmitted from animals to people. Symptoms associated with this infection include flu-like manifestations, neurological complications, and chronic arthritis if left untreated . The implications of such findings underscore the necessity for increased awareness and caution among both residents and visitors in Hawaii.
In humans, the infection may acause flu-like symptoms, neurological issues and chronic arthritis if untreated.
Two of the dolphins were found in Waimanalo on June 7 and 8, and the third was found in Waikane on June 15. Cultural practitioners were present at each response and advised the UH first response team.
Brucella ceti can be dangerous to humans who touch infected marine mammals. It is best to be cautious and avoid touching or handling stranded animals. We strongly urge the public to report any whales and dolphins in distress in the ocean or stranded on beaches,” said Kristi West, associate researcher at UH Manoa’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR).
Researchers say it’s important for the public to report any wildlife strandings since most carcasses are never recovered. Once the animal is recovered after being reported, testing can help researchers understand threats to the health of marine mammals.
“Dolphins and whales are recognized sentinels of ocean health and give us signs and signals about what’s happening out there,” said West. “Three strandings within one week likely represents many more dolphins that died and were lost at sea. It raises our concern about what’s happening to the animals in their ecosystem.”
CTAHR researchers have identified striped dolphins as being especially vulnerable to Brucella ceti and have discovered the bacteria in other species of stranded dolphins and whales.
Experts strongly advise against direct contact with stranded marine mammals due to the potential health risks associated with Brucella ceti . In light of these findings, local authorities urge individuals who encounter distressed dolphins to report their sightings promptly to the NOAA Marine Wildlife Hotline. This precautionary measure is essential not only for human safety but also for ensuring the preservation of marine ecosystems affected by these infections .
