Chris Davis is living everyone’s dream.
He’s getting paid millions not to work well into retirement.
Davis played for the Baltimore Orioles from 2011-2020GettyDavis retired in 2021, following a 13-year career in the majors, having played for the Texas Rangers and the Baltimore Orioles.
And it’s because of the Orioles that he is still getting paid without having to swing a bat.
Davis signed a seven-year, $161million contract in 2016.
A large portion of the deal was deferred into the future, so he would receive future payments.
The total amount of deferred payments is $42m.
Those future payments are now lasting for Davis until 2037.
He is on Baltimore’s payroll for an astonishing 12 more years, even though he hasn’t been on the roster in nearly half a decade.
Davis received $9.16m annually from 2023 to 2025, before it drops to $3.5m annually from 2026 to 2032, and lastly $1.4m annually from 2033 to 2037.
Not bad for a guy who owns the record for the worst hitless streak in Major League Baseball.
During the 2018-2019 seasons, Davis broke the record for the longest hitless streak in MLB history, going 0 for 54.
Davis made the kind of history no baseball player ever wants to makeGettyThe previous record was held by Eugenio Velez, who was 0 for 46 at one point.
Davis made 62 consecutive plate appearances without a hit, before snapping it on April 13, 2019.
The infamous streak had started on September 14, 2018.
“Obviously I’ve been looking forward to it for a while,” Davis said after breaking out of his historic slump.
“But there’s no way to really put into words kind of what I was feeling really when I looked back at our bench and saw the guys going crazy.”
His teammates could see the relief on Davis’ face in that moment.
“We were jumping up for joy like we got the hit,” left fielder Dwight Smith Jr. said.
“He came in with his fists up in the air,” third baseman Rio Ruiz said.
“It was great. For him to go through that, I don’t think he’d wish that on anybody.”
As bad as the hitless streak was for Davis, the one-time All-Star ultimately gets the last laugh.
He’s collecting millions and millions for 12 more years, as he sits on his couch, and raises his three daughters.
Not a worry in the world for Davis.
