Over the course of 20-year wrestling career there wasn’t much Debbie Combs didn’t experience.

The daughter of wrestling star Cora Combs, Debbie was a veteran of the 1970s and 80s wrestling scene where women fought for stardom.

While in today’s WWE, top female stars can command huge salaries and headline WrestleManias, prominent names of yesteryear didn’t always fare as well in terms of opportunity.

Combs, now 66, would certainly fall into that category despite a hugely varied grappling career that took her all around the US having made her debut at the age of 16.

A former partner to wrestling icon Randy Savage, she first rose to prominence with a run with what is now WWE in the mid-1980s.

Then she challenged major names of the day for the Women’s Championship, with matches against Sherri Martel and The Fabulous Moolah – she even beat the latter by count-out.

Her wrestling ventures saw her cris-cross over the States, title glory of her own arriving in 1986 when she won the NWA Women’s Championship before spending time in the AWA and later returning to WWE.

Arguably her most high-profile match was one that never was. Ahead of WrestleMania X in 1994, WWE promoted her in magazines and television episodes as challenging then world Champion Alundra Blayze at the Madison Square Garden spectacle.

Sadly for the Tennessean, she was pulled from the show in favour of fellow veteran Leilani Kai, who was said to offer greater symmetry to WrestleMania having also featured at the maiden Mania event at the same venue ten years prior.

Combs continued to wrestle in the late 1990s before transitioning into a behind the scenes role, leaving the industry altogether for a career in law enforcement.

She worked with a Nashville Sheriff’s office for several years before becoming a bondsman – effectively, she said in an interview last year, a real-life Bounty Hunter.

In that role she faces unthinkable physicality but regularly surprises unsuspecting criminals with an ability to more than handle herself.

She explained: “I’m a Bounty Hunter, so I go out and get people who did not go to court and [go] pick them up and arrest them and take them back to jail.

“That’s the closest to wrestling that you could get! But I enjoy it.

“I’ve been shot at, been knocked out, had 12 stiches in my mouth, I caught him the next week and walked him down [the street] buck naked and into jail!”

Enjoying providing that element of surprise physicality to those not expecting it, she added: “Most of them don’t know what I used to do.

“They don’t expect [it]… but we’ve got a team of women bounty hunting, it’s women who go and get them, and they’re all shocked its women coming after you!

“We’re rough, we don’t play.”

Despite having a total of seven championships to her name and hundreds of matches racked up leading to finale against Martel in 2000, Comb’s wresting career may fly under the radar compared to some who’ve come after.

But she leaves behind a legacy of dedication and hard work in the squared circle – and similarly no-nonsense approach to paying your debts!
