Luke Humphries had some explaining to do over his bizarre drinking methods at the European Grand Prix.

The world No.1 beat Connor Scutt 6-1 in the second round of the tournament in Germany, but went viral for a very different reason.

During one of Scutt’s throws, ‘Cool Hand Luke’ leaned over to his table on the stage and drank from his glass of water without using his hands.

Fans close to the moment in the crowd looked baffled and Humphries rubbed his fingers together in response, later explaining what had happened.

When he was asked about the moment post-win, a slightly embarrassed Humphries said: “Did that get shown on camera?

“My hands were so sweaty, and I didn’t want to touch the glass because there was so much moisture that I was like, ‘if I pick it up with my hands…’”

He continued: “Look, it’s very hot out here. It’s really, really tough. It’s like being abroad when you’re on holiday.

“But you have to make the best of a bad situation, and I thought if I don’t touch the glass, I won’t add that moisture to my hands, and it worked!

“I didn’t know you were going to catch it on camera. I was hoping I did it discreetly, but yeah, I was just trying to help myself a bit.”

The competition was taking place in Sindelfingen, south west Germany, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees over the weekend.

Humphries managed the win in his first game but was then defeated the following day in the third round 6-5 by former world No.1 Michael Smith.

Smith, the 2023 World Champion, then fell 6-5 to Luke Woodhouse in the quarter-finals and showed some emotion over how desperate he is to return to winning ways.

“I’m not bothered about money, I just want to get back to where I was,” he said.

“Not even getting back to world number one — I just want to play again on Sunday nights.

“It’s been a while since I have done that. I want to beat Michael Smith again.”

He then discussed his injury struggles including arthritis in both hands and a shoulder injury from an e-scooter crash.

“That’s the most frustrating thing — the lump in my wrist and the bone sticking out my shoulder, but I’ll get there,” he said.

The tournament was eventually won by Gary Anderson in dominant fashion.

The reigning champion defended his title with a mega performance in the final where he beat Andrew Gilding 8-0.
