Former UFC fighter Ben Askren has undergone successful surgery for a life-saving double lung transplant.

The news comes six days after Ben’s wife, Amy Askren, revealed her husband was on the lung transplant list, following his hospitalisation earlier this month due to a severe case of pneumonia.

Askren had been placed on a ventilator and ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) at a hospital in his home town of Wisconsin.

But he is now set to embark on the long road to recovery after going under the knife.

“We are so thankful to share that Ben has received a double lung transplant,” Amy wrote on Facebook.

“We are forever thankful to the donor and his family.

“This is the beginning of a new lifestyle for Ben, but every new day he has is a gift.

“It still doesn’t feel real that he was walking around completely healthy just 5 weeks ago.

“So much can change so quickly. Please keep Ben in your prayers that his body welcomes the new lungs as if they were his own.

“I am constantly in awe of all the people carrying us through right now. I can’t wait to tell Ben all about it.

“I’m hopeful that in [the] coming weeks Ben will be able to give the next update.

“But hopefully he will wait until the drugs wear off [smiley emoji].”

Askren fought three times in the UFCGETTY

Askren, 40, enjoyed a fruitful MMA career, which included a three-fight stint with the UFC.

He signed with MMA’s premier promotion in 2019 after dominant reigns as welterweight champion in Bellator and ONE FC.

The American boasted an undefeated 19-0 record heading into his UFC tenure.

However, he failed to live up to the lofty expectations placed upon him.

Askren won his promotional debut against Robbie Lawler in March 2019.

But he did so under controversial circumstances after referee Herb Dean prematurely stopped the fight.

Four months later, Askren was on the receiving end of the fastest knockout defeat in the company’s history, courtesy of a flying knee from Jorge Masvidal in the opening five seconds.

Demian Maia then placed the final nail in Askren’s UFC career by submitting him in October 2019.

Shortly after, Askren called time on his MMA career, but he did return two years later to get knocked out by Jake Paul in boxing.
