A statement was issued by representatives of the Druze community in As-Suwayda province, southern Syria, calling for the activation of security in the province and urging the government to secure the road leading to the capital, Damascus.
The statement, obtained by Enab Baladi late on Thursday, May 1, called for an enhanced role of the Ministry of Interior and the judicial police in As-Suwayda, led by residents of the province.
It also demanded the security of the As-Suwayda-Damascus road, holding the government responsible and calling for the establishment of security and safety in Syrian territories.
The statement emphasized the commitment to “a homeland that includes all Syrians, free from strife, sectarian tensions, personal grudges, revenge, and the irrational tribal mentality,” according to their description.
The attendees rejected calls for division and separation from Syria, affirming their “steadfast national positions.”
The statement followed a meeting that included representatives of the Druze community in As-Suwayda, led by the spiritual leader of the community, Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, and the Sheikhs of the mind, Youssef al-Jarbou’ and Hamoud al-Hanawi, in addition to local faction leaders, notably Yahya al-Hajjar and Laith al-Balous.
However, according to information from Enab Baladi, al-Hijri, who attended the meeting, did not confirm his agreement to the terms of its outcomes.
The statement coincided with movements of convoys belonging to the General Security Service of the Syrian Ministry of Interior, indicating a potential implementation of the steps outlined in the statement.
The statement came after tensions witnessed in cities and towns populated mostly by Druze, between factions of the Druze community and others loyal to the government, following an audio recording that insulted Prophet Muhammad, attributed to a Druze Sheikh, which the latter denied.
The clashes began in the city of Jaramana in the countryside of Damascus and then spread to the town of Ashrafiat Sahnaya, reaching the village of Kanaker and various villages and towns in As-Suwayda.
Following the tensions, a statement was issued by Sheikhs al-Jarbou’ and al-Hanawi, calling for the rejection of sectarianism and the condemnation of insults against the Prophet.
This was followed by a statement from al-Hijri, attacking the government, rejecting its recognition, and calling for international protection.
On another note, the head of the Rural Damascus Security Directorate, Colonel Hussam al-Tahan, announced an agreement regarding the city of Jaramana between representatives of the government and dignitaries of the city, stating that it includes the surrender of heavy weapons and increased deployment of General Security Forces.
The agreement also stipulated the surrender of unlicensed personal weapons after a specified period and limiting weapons to the hands of official state institutions.
In Sahnaya, a video released by the local Sahnaya News Network showed a meeting between representatives of the General Security Service and dignitaries of the town to coordinate on security issues and surrender weapons to the state.
