Following Israeli airstrikes near the presidential palace in Damascus, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a strongly worded message to Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, as reported by the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
Targeting the vicinity of the presidential palace in Damascus
Damascus, the Syrian capital, witnessed a notable security escalation in the early hours of Friday, beginning with a powerful explosion near the People’s Palace, which was later revealed to be the result of an Israeli air raid, resulting in plumes of smoke rising from the targeted site.
Regarding the attack near the presidential palace, the Israeli Defense Minister stated, “It constitutes a clear warning message to the Syrian regime. When (al-Assad) wakes up in the morning and sees the results of the attack, he understands well that Israel is determined to prevent harm to the Druze in Syria.”
Katz continued his warning, saying, “It is his duty to protect the Druze in the suburbs of Damascus from attacks by jihadist rioters and to allow hundreds of thousands of Druze in Suwayda and the Druze Mountains to defend themselves, not to send jihadist forces into their communities,” adding, “It is our duty to protect the Druze in Syria from harm for the sake of our Druze brothers in Israel, their loyalty to the state, and their immense contribution to Israel’s security.”
Earlier in the day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that Israel had attacked a target near the presidential palace in the Syrian capital, Damascus, claiming he was seeking to protect the Druze community, while the Syrian government affirmed its commitment to protecting all components of the Syrian people without exception and rejected any external interference.
A tap on the oof
Yedioth Ahronoth noted that the occupation army did not announce details of the attack until after it was announced by Netanyahu’s office, which stated that “fighter jets attacked the area near Bashar al-Assad’s palace in Damascus.”
According to the Israeli newspaper, the Israeli attack was a warning strike carried out by the air force, a kind of “tap on the roof,” not against a specific target, but on a point in the palace area.
