A SAVVY mum has shared how she saves money on pricey Heinz ketchup by swapping it for a £1 alternative.
Emma explained that the original sauce is her daughter’s favourite, but when it ran out, she decided to see if she’d know the difference between the original and a significantly cheaper version.
Emma took to TikTok to share a video of herself sneakily replacing the Heinz ketchupTikTok/@emmawill2014 She replace it with this £1 M&S condimentTikTok/@emmawill2014 She showed herself filling the Heinz bottle with the M&S sauceTikTok/@emmawill2014 Her son looked a bit suspicious when he got it out of the fridge at dinner timeTikTok/@emmawill2014In a video on her TikTok page, mum-of-six Emma showed herself filling the old Heinz bottle with the M&S own brand sauce.
“So we’re out of tomato ketchup, but this is my daughter’s favourite and she hates it if I buy it off brand,” she began.
“So what have I done? I’ve cleaned it out and I’ve got a £1 bottle of Marks & Spencer’s ketchup!
“It’s kind of a, I don’t know, swish brand is it? Either way this is going in there, let’s see if she knows the difference.”
When she squirted the M&S sauce into the Heinz bottle, one of the major differences she noticed was in colour – with the former a darker shade than the latter.
Her other half suggested sniffing it, with Emma insisting “it smells quite nice!”
The M&S ketchup also only filled up half of the Heinz bottle, as Emma said: “She’s going to wonder why there’s only half left and I’ll just say like we found it in the back of the fridge and that it’s still good to eat.”
In the next video, Emma asked her son to get the ketchup out of the fridge, and showed how he seemed slightly suspicious as he examined the bottle.
But when it came to her daughter putting some sauce on her plate to dip her chicken nuggets into at dinner time, she initially seemed unaware that there was any difference.
Things got a bit hairy when she recoiled after taking the first bite of sauce-covered chicken, but she then explained she’d done so because the nugget was “really hot”.
But once it had cooled down, she happily chomped away.
“So is this sauce the best sauce ever?” Emma asked her.
“Because the Heinz one is the best, isn’t it?”
“Yeah. That one’s the best!” her daughter replied delightedly, pointing to the Heinz bottle with the M&S ketchup in.
The comments section was immediately filled with people weighing in, as one wrote: “The price of Heinz has jumped up ridiculously lately..
“I boycott it totally!”
“I put Aldi own brand fish fingers in the (we only like) birds eye cod fish fingers box ….. they never knew!” another mum admitted.
“Been doing this for years, I’ve refilled with Tesco, Aldi and Sainsburys and my kids haven’t got a clue lol!” a third said.
“My Nan’s old neighbour did this,” someone else laughed.
“Her hubby always said, ‘The brands are the best, you cant beat them!’
“She shopped at Aldi & just washed out the branded stuff.
“He didn’t know!”
