Border czar Tom Homan highlighted the Trump administration’s deportation efforts and said having United States-born children does not make people “immune” from deportation.
“Having a U.S. citizen child doesn’t make you immune from our laws of the country,” Homan said Sunday on CBS News’s “Face the Nation.” “American families get separated every day by law enforcement.”
Just days ago, a federal judge sounded the alarm after lawyers accused the Trump administration of deporting a 2-year-old U.S. citizen without “meaningful process.”
The child was deported alongside her sister and mother, who was found to be in the country illegally. Her father filed a petition for release.
A hearing on the matter is scheduled for May 16 in Louisiana.
Homan defended the decision for deportation, saying it’s on the parents if they put their children in that situation.
“Having a U.S. citizen child after you enter this country illegally is not a get out of jail free card,” he said.
He also argued that the child’s mother took her with her upon deportation, calling it “parenting 101” because the mother could have left the child with a relative or another spouse.
Host Margaret Brennan noted that the father who filed the petition tried to make arrangements to secure the child, but they were only granted a brief phone call. Homan pushed back on Brennan’s note before she cut the interview off.
“That’s a parent’s decision. It’s not a government decision. It’s a parent’s decision,” he said.
