University of Northern Colorado sophomore softball pitcher Anna Wilming threw a perfect game in a 9-0 win over Weber State, giving the Bears a split of a Big Sky Conference doubleheader Friday in Ogden, Utah.
Northern Colorado clinched the final series of its conference season with a 3-0 victory Saturday afternoon in the third and final game. Pitchers Grace Algrim and Wilming combined on a four-hit shutout. Weber State won the first game Friday 7-2 after scoring six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
UNC ends the regular season 7-7 in the Big Sky and 16-28 overall. The Bears host the conference tournament May 6-9 at Gloria Rodriguez Field in Greeley.
Wilming, a right-handed transfer from Valparaiso, faced 15 batters in a five-inning, run-rule win while throwing 63 pitches with three strikeouts. In NCAA softball, if one team leads by eight or more runs after the fifth inning, the home plate umpire may declare the run-ahead rule.
Wilming’s perfect game was the second for the program under head coach Dedeann Pendleton-Helm, who is in her third year.
UNC scored four runs on three hits in the top of the second and added five runs on four hits in the top of the third to help Wilming (6-10).
Jaycie Gandert and Kenzie Carter both had two hits, two RBI and a run scored in the second game. Gandert’s stats included a run-scoring triple in the second, and Carter started the scoring in the same inning with a two-run double. Ella Gonzales added three RBI on a single and sacrifice fly.
In the Game 1 win, Weber State scored its six runs on two hits — highlighted by Riley Whalen’s grand slam off UNC relief pitcher Aiyana Cordero. Weber State had only three hits in the game to six for UNC.
Cordero came in for starter Isabelle DiNapoli with the bases loaded and two out in the sixth. UNC started the inning with a 2-1 lead. DiNapoli walked four batters in the inning, including walks to the first two batters she faced. Weber State pinch hitter Tori Rey followed with a one-out, two-run double to give the Wildcats the lead for good.
DiNapoli (7-11) walked eight and struck out four, allowing six runs with five earned runs on two hits.
UNC led 2-1 after 4 1/2 innings on run-scoring singles by Gonzales and Krista Francia.
