The Northern Colorado baseball team nearly pulled off a walk-off win for the second time in two days Saturday.
The Bears scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth inning against University of Nebraska Omaha, but couldn’t complete the Summit League comeback in a 7-6 loss at Jackson Field in Greeley.
UNC (15-25) trailed 7-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth — a day after the Bears beat the Mavericks 4-3 Friday in 11 innings on a bases-loaded walk.
On Saturday, late-order hitters Craig Kenny and Dalton Miller came up with RBIs with two out in the ninth to cut Omaha’s lead to one run. Kenny, the catcher who was 4 for 5 with three RBI in the game, hit a two-run single — bringing in Jake Bullard and Kai Wagner
Miller followed with a single to the outfield, scoring Jake King and cutting Omaha’s lead to 7-6.
Omaha relief pitcher Oliver Mabee retired Carter Monda on fly ball to end the threat and the game.
The teams are scheduled to play the final game of the three-game series at noon Sunday.
Monda drew the bases-loaded walk to earn the RBI and the win Friday. Wagner and Bullard both added three hits. King had an RBI and a run scored. The Bears scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game.
Northern Colorado relief pitcher Dylan Smith (2-5) earned the win after throwing four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Starter Murphy Gienger struck out nine in six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits.
