AFC Bournemouth are buying back their stadium as they plan to double the 11,286 capacity.
Twenty years ago, Bournemouth sold Dean Court, now known as the Vitality Stadium, to property firm Structadene for £3.5million.
The Vitality Stadium is in need of renovationsGettyThe club leased it back to help pay off debts while they were in League One.
Club owner Bill Foley has confirmed the Cherries will repurchase the stadium – which is the smallest in the Premier League.
It is almost 6,000 seats smaller than Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.
Foley has started his process of major investment – as shown by the Cherries’ new state of the art £32m performance centre.
At the official opening, Foley said: “I’m pleased to inform you that we have come to terms on the acquisition of Vitality Stadium and we should be closing that shortly.
“And we also are preparing our pre-application to the council with regard to expanding and renovating the stadium, with the goal being within two and a half years, we’ll have 20,000 seats.
“With the further goal, if things work out well, to go into 23,000 seats.”
If Bournemouth continue their amazing form into next season and beyond, they will have plenty of fans rallying together at the stadium.
Andoni Iraola’s side sit eighth in the Premier League, which would be their highest ever top-flight finish if they stay there, bettering Eddie Howe’s ninth-place finish in the 2016/17 season.
Bournemouth’s current side has a number of standout players such as Antoine Semenyo, Milos Kerkez, Dean Huijsen, and top scorer Justin Kluivert.
Bournemouth have provided their fans with great entertainment beating Arsenal and Man City at homeGettyThe first three have been linked with big money moves away, especially Huijsen, who has a price tag upwards of £50m.
The owner cited the move as a ‘strategic and logical step’ to pursue ‘continued ambitions’.
Foley continued: “It’ll allow us to provide more hospitality, it’ll allow us to take care of some of the 15,000 people that are currently on our waiting list and the stadium will be completely renovated.
“It’s going to be beautiful. And we looked at other options.
“We looked at building a new stadium and working that out, we finally decided it would take us about five or six years.
“So in this case, we will renovate this stadium and we’ll do it in such a way that no fans will be disrupted, it won’t be shut down, everyone will have their seat and then we’ll move forward and be able to start expanding our base.”
