Why Prasidh Krishna is better choice than Harshit Rana in India’s XI for England Tests ...Middle East

Prasidh Krishna is an obvious pick in India’s squad for the upcoming Test series against England and so will be Harshit Rana. But, the Karnataka pacer will come of more use to India in the playing XI than the Delhi bowler. Besides, Krishna has been in red-hot form off late, and has already made his case for a spot in India’s XI in the five-match series that commences in June.

Rana

First, let’s talk about Rana. He was fast-tracked to the Indian Test team following a stellar run in IPL 2024 with KKR. In 2 Tests that he played so far (both in Border-Gavaskar Trophy), he managed to pick just 4 wickets in 45 overs. He averages 50.75, boasting of best figures of 3/48. Rana has conceded 203 runs while having bowled 6 maidens in the two Tests that he has played so far.

On the other hand, Krishna is slightly more experienced, having made his Test debut in 2023. Although he has played only 3 Tests so far, one more than Rana, he has 8 wickets to his name. Here’s where the impact factor comes in.

Two of his 8 wickets came against South Africa in the same series. Then, nearly a year later and after warming the bench for a lot of games, he finally got a chance to play in the IND vs AUS 5th Test in Sydney. And he didn’t let that opportunity go by just like that. In just that one game, he picked up 6 wickets, conceding 107 runs from 27 overs, averaging 17.83 and best figures of 3/42.

The fact that Krishna managed to make more impact in just one game when compared to Rana justifies the argument for his inclusion in the playing XI over the latter. Besides, Krishna also holds the height advantage which could come of good use in England.

When we talk about first-class cricket, Krishna boasts of an impeccable record. He has 88 wickets to his name from just 24 matches, averaging 21.57. On the other hand, Rana has played only 12 FC matches and has 47 wickets to his name, at an average of 22.45.

Now taking into account of both Prasidh’s experience of playing more red-ball cricket and more game-time in overseas conditions, he is the best choice for playing second fiddle to Bumrah and Shami.

Now, let’s talk about recent form. Krishna returned to the red-ball setup after the Australia tour and managed to take 7 wickets for Karnataka in two Ranji Trophy games. In IPL 2025, the Karnataka pacer has 16 wickets to his name from 8 matches and is currently the Purple Cap holder.

Rana, on the other hand, has 11 wickets from 8 matches. He has tasted more success with the white-ball than the red.

Hence, it makes all the sense for India to pick Krishna ahead of Rana in the XI for the series against England.
