This morning’s lineup consisted of the men’s 100 free, women’s 200 free, men’s 400 IM, men’s 50 breaststroke, men’s 200 fly, women’s 200 backstroke and women’s 100 fly.
As a reminder, this is not the Australian selection meet for the 2025 World Championships. Most swimmers are using this competition as a tune-up for the World Championship Trials, which are set for June 9–14 in Adelaide.
The trio of Flynn Southam (49.09), Jamie Jack (49.12) and William Yang (49.13) were separated by only four-hundredths in the 100 free heats this morning to set up an intriguing race tonight. Southam holds the best time of the three with a 47.77 from 2023, but Jack holds the fastest season best with his 48.27 PB from back in December. He was the silver medalist on the 50 yesterday so will have the early speed, demonstrated by going out six-tenths faster than the other two this morning.
Thomas Ceccon took the fourth seed in 49.41, off his season best of 48.18 from last month. He’s looking for the Italian qualification time of 48.09 tonight, which should be well within his capabilities as he holds a PB of 47.71. Ceccon won the 100 fly last night ahead of Matt temple in 51.25, setting a new personal best and qualifying for Singapore. Temple was sixth here this morning in 49.55, a season best and only just off the 49.41 he was at this meet last year.
New Zealand’s Carter Swift was seventh in 49.66, just ahead of 200 free champ Max Giuliani in eight with a 49.74. Both hold best times in the 48-low range so could be dangerous from an outside lane tonight.
Lani Pallister followed on from her 400 free victory last night by taking top seed in the 200 in 1:58.62, half a second ahead of 18-year-old Inez Miller. That’s only just faster than the 1:58.80 she split at the halfway mark yesterday, so there’s much more in store from her tonight. Notably, silver medalist in the 400 Erika Fairweather was not entered in the event.
Brittany Castelluzzo took sixth as the final women under 2 minutes in 1:59.83, just ahead of Olympic Champion Mollie O’Callaghan in seventh. The St Peters Western swimmer was 2:00.04, but after winning the 100 free on Day 1 and holding a best time of 1:52.48 has plenty of time to drop.
There was no Kaylee McKeown in the 200 backstroke tonight, as the top seed and Olympic Champion dropped the event after winning the 50 and 100 backstroke earlier in the meet.
The backstroke star announced a move of training base on Instagram today, as she will be moving from Griffiths University to USC Spartans on the Sunshine Coast. McKeown had undergone a coaching change at Griffiths since Paris—her former coach, Michael Bohl, took a role with the Chinese Swimming Association and she was training under Mel Marshall on the Gold Coast. McKeown is originally from Queensland, so this is something of a homecoming for her.
That left Hannah Fredericks to take the top seed in 2:12.38, four seconds off her entry time of 2:08.25. Fredericks was the third-place finisher in the 100 backstroke on Day 2 behind McKeown and Mollie O’Callaghan,
Jaclyn Barclay made it through in fourth, as the Doha World Champs silver medalist went 2:15.79. Her best stands at 2:07.88, but she was only sixth in the 100 backstroke on Day 2.
Ella Ramsay made it through in ninth in 2:18.04, swimming a tough 200 free/200 backstroke double.
Alexandria Perkins nailed a time of 57.71 to take top spot in the 100 fly, exactly a second ahead of Lily Price in second. That is only six-tenths off her best time, and continues a great meet for her after setting PB’s in the 50 and 100 free, and coming within a tenth in the 50 fly yesterday. She was the only women out in under 27 seconds, so look for her to carry some early speed tonight.
Brittany Castelluzzo took third in 59.20, but after winning the 200 in a new best time will hope to be down near her PB of 57.80. 200 fly runner-up Abbey Connor is just behind her in fourth after swimming a 59.32.
Additional Top Qualifiers:
Harrison Turner was the only man under two minutes in the 200 fly this morning, clipping that mark in 1:59.98. Rio Olympian David Morgan was tenth with a swim of 2:05.19, with Matt Temple forgoing this event in favour of the 100 free. Lewis Carelburt (4:17.61) and William Petric (4:24.68) will look to repeat their 1-2 finish from the 200 IM yesterday in the 400, with Clareburt holding a healthy 7 second advantage. David Schlicht was just of his PB in that shorter event and could go close to his best of 4:18.76 here tonight. Sam Williamson, the fourth-fastest man in the 50 breaststroke so far this year, took top spot in 27.31 this morning. His season best stands at 26.66, and he’ll hope to double up here after winning the 100 on Day 1. Grayson Bell (27.55) and Josh Collett (27.94) were the only other swimmers under 28 seconds.Read the full story on SwimSwam: 2025 Australian Open Day 4 Prelims: McKeown Scratches 200 Back, Pallister Top Seed In 200 Free
