The creative team also includes producer Ethan Gruska, who collaborated with Jepsen on songs from her last album, The Loveliest Time, and award-winning playwright Jessica Huang, who will co-write the musical’s book with Dunham, according to Billboard.
The project won’t be Jepsen’s first foray into Broadway. She previously did a stint in the title role in the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella in 2014 and played Frenchy in the 2016 production of Fox-TV’s Grease: Live. However, this marks the first off-stage role for her and Dunham on the Great White Way.
Fans were thrilled by the news, with one predicted that Jepsen has an award in her future. “CARLY RAE JEPSEN TONY INCOMING,” they wrote, while another posted, “I've always said your music feels like a musical, we're finally getting a musical from you ❤️.”
The 1999 film, based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, starred Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
