A Weld County man faces up to 1,200 years behind bars after a jury convicted him on 50 felony charges this past week for firing nearly 30 rounds at an east Greeley bar in 2022.
Efren Sanchez, 39 (Courtesy/Greeley Police)Efren Sanchez, 39, faces 400 to 1,200 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for the shooting and will be sentenced on June 13, according to a release from the Weld District Attorney’s office. He was convicted Friday of 25 counts of attempted first-degree murder after deliberation and 25 counts of attempted first-degree murder resulting from extreme indifference, as well as two sentence enhancers for committing a crime of violence.
“He shot bullet after bullet, causing panic and pain,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia said during closing arguments Friday, per the release. “These are innocent victims with forever reminders of the defendant’s actions.”
Greeley Police arrested Sanchez on August 27, 2022 — two weeks after he fired 28 shots at the Rancho El Corazon bar, 125 E. 18th St., before fleeing the scene.
Police responded to the bar at 11:15 p.m. Aug. 13, 2022, and on arrival, saw two victims who had been shot. Both were taken to a hospital and survived.
Police identified Sanchez as the shooter after seeing footage of him leaving the bar earlier in the night, then returning armed with a rifle. He later told police that he had felt “disrespected” by another patron, according to the release.
Footage then showed Efren firing several rounds at people outside the bar, before moving closer and shooting several more times into the bar from outside the building.
Pirraglia and Chief Deputy District Attorney Anthony Perea prosecuted the case.
