Ben Whittaker and Liam Cameron will run it back over 10 rounds on Easter Sunday after their first meeting controversially ended as a technical draw.

Whittaker had quickly begun to establish himself as one of the rising stars of British boxing as he put together an 8-0 record and built a big following thanks to his eye-catching style.

He went into his bout with Cameron in October as the clear favourite and seemed to be doing enough in the early exchanges.

However, the momentum turned and Cameron appeared to have the upper hand when a bizarre incident saw the fight halted in the sixth.

Both fighters fell out of the ring and Whittaker was forced to withdraw due to an injury sustained in that incident. The scorecards were required, one judge had Whittaker a round up, one had Cameron ahead by a round and one had the fight level.

Whittaker can get the decision

The strange circumstances that led to the first fight reaching an early conclusion understandably led to the suggestion that Whittaker was looking for a way out, or that he had been ‘found out’ by the more experienced Cameron.

Whether there is any truth in that we may never know, but the fact that he is jumping back in against the same opponent indicates he still sees Cannonball as a man he can beat.

Cameron’s pressure started to tell in that first fight and the rematch should give us a better indication of just how good Whittaker is. His style is unorthodox and his movement tends to confuse lesser opponents, but Cameron’s ability to keep coming forward nullified that threat from Whittaker.

Rather than being found out, that first fight may instead prove to be a teachable moment for the 2020 Olympic silver medallist.

Cameron should go into this bout with essentially the same plan, whereas Whittaker will feel he needs to make some big changes to how he goes about his business.

Given how close the first fight was at the time of the premature stoppage there is a strong argument to be made for backing Cameron as the underdog.

However, that may have just been an off night in some respects for Whittaker, and the Surgeon should be skillful enough and smart enough to work out a path to victory on Sunday.

Whittaker doesn’t carry a huge amount of power for a light heavyweight and Cameron has never been stopped, despite having six defeats on his record.

The Sheffield man went the full distance with Lyndon Arthur, losing via split decision, so the judges could well be required at the end of this one and Whittaker has the technical ability to outbox and outpoint his opponent, providing he can put in a better showing than when they last met in Riyadh.
