OAKLAND — A man was arrested Thursday for allegedly driving a stolen car that plowed into another vehicle in West Oakland in 2023, leaving its driver dead and a passenger badly injured.

The suspect, Lamar L. Mabry, 36, who was arrested in East Oakland, was sought on a warrant charging him with several felonies.

He is facing charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing death or injury, driving under the influence with a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08 percent causing injury, driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol causing injury, unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, receiving stolen property, and misdemeanor hit-and run.

Court records also show Mabry, of Oakland, has two prior felony convictions: second-degree robbery in February 2013 and evading an officer with willful disregard for public safety in June 2022. He received prison terms for both convictions. He also has a prior misdemeanor conviction for DUI in 2021 in Yolo County, court records show.

Mabry is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Killed in the Dec. 13, 2023 collision that happened about 11 a.m. at the intersection of 16th Street and Mandela Parkway was Samrawit Abbadura, 23, of Oakland.

A then-24-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle suffered multiple injuries, including some fractures, and had an extended hospitalization.

Police allege that Mabry was driving a Ford Fusion that had been reported stolen in Oakland earlier in the day. He had been involved in a hit-and-run collision a few blocks away and was driving eastbound on 16th Street at a high rate of speed, authorities said.

Police said he failed to stop at two posted stop signs before broadsiding a Honda Accord driven by Abbadura that was going northbound on Mandela Parkway. She was working as a driver for a ride-share company and had just picked up the 24-year-old woman.

The collision’s impact sent both vehicles onto a sidewalk, where they stopped after hitting two parked vehicles and a fence, police said. Abbadura died at the scene.

Mabry was arrested at the scene and was initially being held in lieu of $110,000 bail. But when charges were not immediately filed he was released from custody pending further investigation, including lab work. An arrest warrant was issued for him after formal charges were filed April 1.
