A MAJOR change at Burger King has left the chain in hot water just days after 57 of its locations filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Social media has been left in uproar after a new Burger King location was heavily criticized for its “boxy” appearance.

It started after one Facebook user shared the news that a new spot had just popped up in Swannanoa, North Carolina.

The initial post was quite positive about the new location, which is not something reflected in the comments.

The caption of the post said: “New Burger King in Swannanoa NC looks very modern and clean.

“Not sure what to think but it’s nice.”

The image shows the spot from across the street, noticeably sleek and simple in design.

Older Burger King spots don’t have the updated logo, for example, which is a lot more refined.

COMMENT CHAOS

But customers were not happy with this design change, and used the comments of the post to call that out.

One person said: “Looks like a big shoebox.”

This exact sentiment was reflected in another comment: “Cold and lifeless modern shoebox design.”

And a third summarized the opinions of the group, arguing that the new design stripped Burger King of its personality.

They added: “I don’t think it’s bad, it’s just not got a defining characteristic that says Burger King.

“If you took the signs off you wouldn’t know.

“I’d guess that it was probably something like a Starbucks.

“Remember the joy of seeing construction going on and guessing what the building will be?

“That’s not a thing anymore because you see an announcement online long before any construction begins.

“Ads are personalized so they don’t have to get your attention with architecture anymore.”

BK BANKRUPT

This trouble comes just days after Burger king‘s future in the US was plunged into jeopardy with a bankruptcy filing.

The US Sun reported that the fast food chain is working to clear debts worth more than $36 million.

Burger King has faced declining sales, with execs blaming the impact of a downturn in sales and inflation.

In 2024, the franchisee’s revenue totaled $67 million, which is down around $10 million.

Consolidated Burger Holdings filed for Chapter 11 on April 14.

How does bankruptcy work?

Bankruptcy is a specific legal process that helps companies eliminate debt they can't repay.

The process allows businesses to start fresh and gain access to new credit.

Supervised by federal courts, bankruptcies allow a company to sell off its assets more easily to pay off creditors, according to Investopedia.

Chapter 11, a common process for companies, is used to restructure a business with the goal of remaining open – even if it means selling off most of the company’s properties.

Chapter 7, on the other hand, sells all of a company’s assets, putting it out of business.

Chapter 15, alternatively, allows for collaboration between American and foreign courts to conduct bankruptcy proceedings with “parties of interest involving more than one country,” per the United States Courts.

It runs 19 locations in South Florida and 18 in Georgia and is just the latest franchisee to file.

In 2023, execs at Toms King filed for bankruptcy, as did Premier Kings.

Toms King ran 88 locations and has since sold 82 of them at auction.

Premier Kings ran 172 stores at the time of its bankruptcy filing in October 2023.

In an effort to turn things around, bosses at Burger King are trying to broaden the appeal of the brand to younger people.

Tom Curtis, the president of Burger King North America, said: “Our plan is focused on a few important priorities — operational excellence, refreshed image, and enhanced marketing — that when put together, provide a superior experience for our Guest.”
