Rece Davis said Lee Corso was a “cornerstone” on ESPN’s College GameDay and a “trailblazer” for the way college football was covered in a video shared on social media Thursday.
Corso will retire from ESPN in August, the network announced on Thursday. After 38 years as one of the most prominent figures in college football, Corso will make his final appearance on GameDay on Aug. 30. Davis, the host of the traveling pregame show, will surely have a special tribute planned for his longtime colleague and friend.
On Thursday, Davis shared what Corso meant to him.
“In a sport that’s really built on nostalgia and tradition, there’s no greater moment in the sport, in my judgement, than when L.C. puts on that mascot head on Saturday morning,” Davis said. “It’s as if kickoffs aren’t really official until L.C. has made his pick. In fact, when you walk around campus on Friday before College GameDay, that’s the No. 1 question. ‘Who’s Corso going to pick?’ It’s because of something Corso has taught us from the very beginning: It’s entertainment, sweetheart. Football is our vehicle and, man, did he use that vehicle brilliantly.”
