For openers, the fourth umpire will test the bats just before they walk out to the field. For the rest, the on-field umpires will do the check as they come in to bat during the matches.
There were also growing concerns among the IPL teams that some opposing players were using bats bigger than the allowed size, especially thicker ones at the middle of the blade.
This forced the BCCI and the match officials to introduce the on-field gauge test in the middle of the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Two days after this new rule came into action, the IPL 2025 clash between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mullanpur saw a number of bats defaulted.
According to the current rules, a cricket bat must follow certain size limits:
The blade can be no wider than 4.25 inches and no deeper than 2.64 inches, and the edges can’t be thicker than 1.56 inches. The bat must also fit smoothly through a special measuring tool called a bat gauge. For bats bigger than size 6, the handle can’t be more than 52% of the total length of the bat. Any material covering the blade should not be thicker than 0.1 cm. The protective material at the toe of the bat can’t be more than 0.3 cm thick.
All teams have been told about the new rule where umpires will now check the bat sizes before a batter walks in to bat in the ongoing season. So far, no team has raised any objections to this change.
BCCI asks umpires to go easy on player celebrations in IPL 2025
At the same time, umpires have been asked to be a little softer when it comes to player celebrations. The BCCI took the stand for the players after the umpires penalized Lucknow Super Giants bowler Digvesh Rathi twice in the ongoing season for doing his ‘notebook’ celebration.
Recently, umpires’ responsibilities have been reduced. Earlier, they had to check front-foot no-balls, but that’s no longer their job. Now, even in cases like a run-out at the non-striker’s end or obstructing the field, umpires have been told not to ask the captains if they want to take back their appeal. Earlier, umpires would check with the captains in such situations, but that’s not the case now.
