04/16/2025Sharing what appears to be the song’s artwork on Instagram, Lorde simply wrote, “My new song What Was That. Out soon.”
In the picture, the New Zealand-born singer-songwriter — wearing a bright red T-shirt, her signature dark hair pleated in two braids — stares down the camera with water dripping down her face. In her caption, Lorde added that Talia Chetrit shot the photo.
“What Was That” will mark the Grammy winner’s long-awaited comeback after last releasing an album in 2021, with third studio effort Solar Power debuting at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. She briefly reemerged last year to work it out on the remix with Charli XCX, appearing on a secondary version of the latter’s Brat track “Girl, So Confusing.” Just a few days prior to her new song announcement, Lorde joined Charli on stage at Coachella to help perform the duet.
The news comes exactly a week after Lorde first teased “What Was That” with her first-ever post on TikTok, sharing a video of herself walking through Washington Square Park in New York City while listening to the dreamy synth-pop track. “Since I was 17, I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream, well baby, what was that?” she sings on the snippet.
In a voice note sent to fans a few days later, Lorde further hinted that a new musical era was fast-approaching. “I just wanted to say hi, because everything is about to change,” she said in the message. “These are the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy. But so right. I’m so ready.”
