A Hamas leader on Monday revealed the most important points of Israel’s conditions for a ceasefire and hostage exchange.
The Al-Mayadeen news website reported the leader, whose name was not given, as saying that the proposal stipulates the release of nine Israeli hostages, amongst them the Israeli-American soldier Edan Alexander.
The proposal includes a 45-day cessation of hostilities, the opening of crossings, and the entry of aid – all subject to Israel’s conditions.
The proposal also includes the redeployment of the Israeli army to its pre-March 2 status, which requires the withdrawal of the Israeli army to the positions it held before the resumption of fighting.
He added that the proposal calls for entering the second phase of negotiations, which includes a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal, disarming of Hamas’ weapons, and ceding administration of Gaza.
The Hamas leader emphasized that the Israeli proposal “aims to disarm Hamas and ensure it does not return to governing Gaza.”
The leader therefore announced that Hamas views Israel’s proposal to be insufficient to meet its basic demands for a permanent ceasefire and a complete withdrawal from the Gaza Strip.
“The Israeli proposal does not guarantee a ceasefire and is gradually removing the hostage card from Hamas’s hands.”
The Hamas leader added that the movement, “Has not responded to the Israeli proposal and is currently studying it.”
